Open bypass may 18

I'm really glad to have found this group....I did a bit of searching about some concerns I have, but thought it best to just ask....so thank you.
I had a lap band removal 6 months ago and the surgeon found I have an excessive amount of scar tissue from that and other abdominal surgeries. He is qualified to preform the surgery, but has warned me that I am a higher risk for serious complications following the first month. Leaks ....etc. I am told this is the best surgery for a cough that has all but ruined my life. Has anyone gone thru a similar situation? Thank you so much, monica

I am having a laporostic (spelling) bypass on May 9th. I don't really have any health issues other than weight, but I am pretty nervous and excited about having the procedure. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. Saying goodbye to the old life and hello to the new. Good Luck!

Hi Monica,
I had my open bypass about 13 years ago. I have had many surgeries and procedures since. A year and a half ago I had a fistula repaired that saved my life. because I had the open roux-en-Y bypass, I struggled finding a surgeon to help me. Too much scarring for many surgeons, too high risk. There were two in my state that said they would "give it a try" to close the hole. I was fortunate enough to find a wonderful surgeon out of Cleveland Clinic that not only repaired the hole, but did it laparoscopically! he found that when he got in there my stomach was not only attached to my pouch and created a large whole, but it was attached to my liver as well and doing damage.

so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I know now to not ignore the pain and discomfort, to make sure to push for what I believe in! Don't just settle for what they say, we know our own bodies and we need to listen to it.

Good luck to you! If you have confidence in your doctor, you are half way there. If you doubt how you feel, stop and reconsider. There are nerves and there are flags. I will never just trust and listen to a doctor again. Do not be afraid to make the doctor stop and fully answers your questions. Don't let them just "give it a try". I just went for a scope to double check on how my pouch is doing with the original doctor that found the fistula, and she was very impressed at how my pouch looks now! Told me it finally looks like what a pouch should look like after bypass. Made me feel great!

Hi! I am a new-comer to this site and so glad to have found it! I had my band removed last month due to ulcers. I am now waiting to see if insurance will approve a revision to by-pass. Hoping not to have to go thru the entire process over again since I have already met out-of-pocket max for year and would like it done this year, but may have to. My doctor said my band was not the hardest to remove, but not the easiest either. Also, lots of scar tissue as well. Please keep posting as you go thru your process, I will be following you! I'm so sorry I didn't respond sooner...I was still in the hospital. I wrote a new post. This was and is hard. I know it will be worth it in the end tho. When was you band removed?
