11 years out and they discovered i have a fistula from my bypass surgery.

I have just discovered that i have a gastric fistula, where my original stomach has attached itself to my pouch and caused an opening...a larger one too. There are two ways to fix it...one is endoscopic which is less invasive but my surgeon has never done it. He has had the training but never performed: makes me pretty nervous. The other is to open me back up, detach my original stomach, remove some of it to not happen again, then sew me back up. I had the open bypass so they are not able to do this lapricscopic. What do you think and is anyone else going through this. I am going crazy here...
Thanks,

Thanks,

I would ask my doc for the name of an experienced surgeon. Good luck

I agree with Deena212. There must be surgeons who have done this type of repair. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

I am currently researching both of my surgical options on the internet. I have several calls even to doctors out of state. My surgeon seems to think he can do it if my insurance allows it, but i do not feel too confident about this. With the open repair, i go through all the pain and suffering of the original weight loss surgery, but without the benefit because it will not repair the over dialated intestinal out. So i am reluctant to go through all of it but just cannot stand to feel sick anymore. I have been sick and depressed from feeling sick all the time for going on 2 years. They believe from the pictures that i have had this fistula for a long time. In fact when i had the scope done, that doctor had said she had never seen anything like it. My suppose to be old stomach was full functioning as if i had never had the surgery. i guess i am just looking to find out if other are going through this and if so are they confident enough in their surgeon to allow them to repair it. Another problem i have is that i am 11 post so all the original sugeons are gone, just one nurse is still there. The surgeon that wants to do the surgery had just joined the bariatric center right before i was release...and he released me with good health. Within a week later i was in the plastic surgeons office and he told me a had a large hernia and asked who was repairing it. Of course that was 1o years ago and i am sure he is much better now...i just don't get the warm and fuzzy from him. Revisions are high risk and you really want to feel like your surgeon cares if you live or die and have success...i do not not feel that way with this surgeon. His statements like "we will try this first but don't count on it being permanent" scares me. I am 43 years old and fairly healthy except the issues i have had from the RNY. If anyone has a really great surgeon or group they went to that does or may be doing this type of repair, please let me know.

I am located in Midland Michigan, but i am willing to travel if it means that i get a surgeon that i can trust. I was looking into New York and Ohio already. I hear they are great in Florida, i have family there. I just do not have a name of a good surgeon to research.

I understand that Dr Stephen Boyce in Knoxville TN is well known for revision surgery. I'm not sure if he has done the particular surgery that you need.

Research Dr. Mathew Fitzer in Reston VA. - Currently on HEALTHGRADES he has (14 out of 14) 5 star ratings. I picked him out last spring after researching him online as having 100 percent patient patient satisfaction ratings and after talking with him found out he has never lost a patient in 2000 bariatric surgeries. I think he is awesome. My surgery went great and I couldn't be happier.

Now I went on HEALTHGRADES and see 7 out of 7 patients gave him 5 stars but somewhere today I read 14 out of 14 patients gave him 5 stars but it must have been some other website? Sorry about that. I'll try to find where I read it.

There are 47 reviews of Dr. Mathew Fitzer from patients on ObesityHelp.com however I still can't find where I read the 14 reviews.

Thank you very much...i am looking into all suggestions. Apparently there are surgeons that do revision work, but do not do revision work on patients that have had an open RNY surgery. Too much scar tissue makes for more complications. I was wondering if anyone has heard of the fistula after bariatric...maybe if someone else has went through this.

If you want to come to New York, my surgeon is one of the top bariatric surgeons in the USA. He has done many repairs as well.

His name is Dr. Brathwaite. Here is the site where you can get to read up on him as well. http://www.winthropbariatrics.com/

Hope you find someone to do your repair.

Winthrop is also a center of excellence for bariatric surgery. They are located in Mineola, NY, which is on Long Island, Ny

just curious what did you end up doing..oh my gawd and I though I had problems!
Sorry for the delayed response.
I did get my fistula repaired at Cleveland Clinic. It took me a while to find a surgeon I was comfortable with, but after many hours of research and meeting several, it was Cleveland Clinic that I went with. They were wonderful and I have recovered wonderfully. He ended up doing it laparoscopically and when he got in he found that my stomach was not only attached to my pouch, but my liver as well. He detached my stomach from both my liver and pouch, removed the damaged material from my pouch as well as removed a large portion of my stomach. He found that I had never really healed from my original surgery. I was having a reaction to the original staples that were used to close my stomach. That portion was removed and sent to be analyzed. I also had an infection in my stomach that I had been carrying with me for some time from this.

If I ever need help with it again, I know what hospital I will use in the future! They were absolutely amazing. Because many of there patients are from other states, they really go out of their way to help make arrangements and combine things for less trips. They were awesome and truly saved my life!
Thank you and hope you are well...

That's awesome.. I discovered an allergy to the sutures used to do primary close the gut.. Which caused hernia.. Oh the cascade effect from that.. Fistula is one that I'm currently dealing with. So glad to know you've been healed and doing well..

Hello I am new here and not sure I'm following the rules, but I read the post and I am curious what are your symptoms? Had my surgery back in 2007 and have gone from 180 to 240 almost over night. I get chills and then all my joints ache just like being sick but only lasts maybe an hour or two . Been this way a couple of years now and would like to find some answers.
