I was sleeved 2012 and lost 85 lbs and have gained 40 back. Some was due to thyroid issues and the rest is will power. I need a support group that I can relate to...I never imagined I would gain weight after surgery....please help. Where do I start?

Hi Jan. Don't beat yourself up about the weight gain, I've heard only 5% of people who get surgery maintain their weight lose. Thyroid issues will definitely pack on the pounds and cause depression which leads to comfort food binges. Vitamin B and Vitamin D deficiencies also cause weight gain. I'm new to this forum. I haven't had the surgery, I'm seeking alternatives first. I was trying to post a thread to ask people who've had surgery if they think eating a post bariatric diet without having the surgery would help with weight loss-couldn't figure out how to do it though. I'm 43yrs old 5'5 255lbs. All these diets/surgeries out there is so confusing. I suggest weight watchers. After googling all kinds of other things it seems to be the most reasonable as far as food and price. I keep saying I'm going to sign up, I just don't have the confidence that I'll stick to any type of program. Good luck with everything, Hope

Jan, I totally understand where you are coming from and I am having issues myself...Hope, if you use the bariatric way of eating you can lose weight. You are changing your habitats. First thing, look at your portions. I can only eat half a chicken breast at 2.5 yrs out and (I lost 90lbs from 341 and now I am back up, not over 300) weight gain. I can only eat a 4oz burger (no bun), etc. Now that is my protein. I also will only eat one small tablespoon of potatoes/pasta/starch (including fruit and vegetables). This is how it works. No water half before, during or after...no beverages!!! Eat your protein first, smaller bites and chewing longer. Try using a toddler fork or spoon if needed. Eat the entire protein portion. Next if still hungry, you can have a bite or two more, or finish with your carbs. Put that utensil down between bites. You can have 3-6 meals depending on the calories...Or 3 meals and 2 snacks. Snacks are almonds, half a yogurt container. The key is keeping calories down, carbs down, fiber good, and protein between 80-90 grams. Also, protein shakes/drinks are good for meal replacement. Always look for anything with about 15 grams of protein to replace a meal. Does that help?
Jan, I had a huge surgery in July 2014 (6 months after my sleeve) due to a diagnosis of stage 4 ovarian cancer. So many things have led to me not losing weight, it is maddening. I am at wits end. Starting this month I am making a pledge to myself, to take care of me. Doing whatever I need to do to see that weight go back down. I am looking at another surgery for repair, so I am hoping that will also help and not hinder my progress...I am always here to talk with and I know others in our boat. Good luck

Hi ladies! I didn't have the sleeve done, I had routen y. I lost a lot of weight and was doing fabulous. Then in March 2014, I had to have my lower back fused which ended a lot of my exercising and how much weight I can lift. Then last year I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. They put me on gabapentin which makes you gain weight. I have put 35 pounds on since then. I am going to try resetting my pouch with a 14 day liquid diet and hope that helps. I wish you both the best of luck.
Jan, Pbell is right with what she is telling you. Give it a try and see what happens.
Take care!

I just had my sleeve done 4 days ago.. I lost 30 pounds in the 3 months preparing for the surgery. I did it by supplementing one or 2 meals with the protein shakes or a protein bar... I started long before the mandatory 2 week protein shake meal plan. I found them satisfying.
