I have a pre-surgery question for someone

How long do you stay in the hospital and what is this drainage tube I am hearing about and how long is that in me. Also I am a belly sleeper and don't know if I still will be able to. Did anyone have complications after or during a RNY gastric bypass surgery? I am really nervous but have to do this for my health. Thanks booboo709

A few surgeons like to put a drainage tube in so fluids after surgery don't build up. I heard the tube doesn't stay in very long. I didn't have a tube at all and I did wonderful. You could check around to other surgeons and find one who doesn't do the drainage tube if it's a concern for you.

Best of Luck,

Cheyenne

I didn't have the tube either. I believe it is based on the situation during surgery. As for stomach sleeping it will be painful for a few weeks. I'm a side sleeper myself and after about 6 days was able to use a pillow on my side to help. I was in hospital 2 nights. Drain if used is removed before you leave hospital

Hi boo boo, where I'm having my surgery done, we only stay one night. Now you have to remember it all depends on how well you do after the surgery. They get you up to walk not too long after you have surgery so you can go home the next day. I guess everyone is different with the drainage tube. I guess we'll find that out when we have our surgeries, right? Don't worry too much. Everything will fall into place. Take one step at a time. Just let it happen. Good luck :)

I was in the hospital from Monday to Thursday. The drains came out before I went home and was simple. You probably won't want to sleep on your belly for awhile. I found side sleeping tugged so it was back for me for a while. I had no complications. Just make sure you have a good thorough doctor who has a good follow up program like a support group. Also, address any eating issues before you do this or you will gain it all back gastric bypass is a tool, not a cure. For me it has been great. Got me off 10 medications and I found my self confidence again. You can do this but you have to be committed and follow the program. It has been 6 1/2 years for me and I am still below my goal weight.

Hi, I was in for three days and had no drain tube. Out of all the surgeries I've had this one was an easy one! Small incisions, little pain. When I woke up after surgery I was very thirsty though. My mouth felt like glue, but they did give me ice chips that I had to spit out! You will do fine! Cheers to a new life!

Hi,
I haven't had surgery yet but the hospital stay for me will be four days. As for a drainage tube, you won't feel it. It is necessary but will be taken out before you go home so don't worry yourself about it. As far as sleeping on your belly, I would guess you will be back to that within a couple weeks or less. And finally, I was told that complications are rare and that this surgery is very safe. They do most of them through very small incisions now and not open abdomen. It helps SO much to have it done this way. No major incisions in the muscles and infections are very rare. Recovery is much faster and pain is easily kept under control. I was told that this surgery is one that you should not worry over because it is very safe. I hope this helps you.

I had RNY surgery 6.5 years ago. They told the risk is about the same as a hip replacement. I was in the hospital for 4 days and they took the drains out before I left. The first week was pretty uncomfortable but after it was fine. Here I am now 100# lighter and off 10 medications I used to take.
