Glad for this site....

Yes, I love this site too. There is so much stuff to get ready for that something crucial can slip threw. I don't remember who but someone reminded me about which vitamins I wasn't suppose to take. I was able to stop in time before my date was postponed. That could of cost me a lot of money and I am so thankful!!!

I am new to this site, I am in the process of being approved for surgery, I have had all the medical tests and am working with the psychologist now. I am logging my food, exercise and fullness. As family stress is high due to my Mother having heart problems and soon going to assisted living and I have been concerned that it will delay me being approved. So I am joining this site to get support for the bariatric questions I have. How long have others waited for surgery? What made you feel you were completely ready? What protein shakes do you like? Thank you, Mary Kay

Welcome Mary Kay!!! I began my journey of getting surgery at the end of July last year and was supposed to have surgery in the middle of October. Unfortunately, it was decided the day before surgery that I have an unnecessary stress test, so my actual surgery wasn't until December 6. My insurance didn't require that I work with a dietician before surgery, but I know a lot of people on here did. This will increase the amount of time it takes to get the surgery. I was completely ready because I was gaining weight instead of losing while on traditional diets. I was quickly approaching my highest weight ever, again, and knew I had to do something. Yes, I was scared to go so drastic, but I am so glad I did. I have tried a bunch of shakes and the ones I can tolerate the best are Premier Protein Chocolate shakes. You can get them at Wal Mart or Costco. Hope this helps. Let us know if you have other questions.

It took three months for my approval. Started on January 27, 2017 and had my surgery on May 2, 2017. It all depends on your insurance how much the Dr wants you to lose before surgery. Work hard on losing what Dr wants you to lose. It will prepare you for the post op. That really helped me a lot. Best wishes on your journey

Hi there! I'm new here as well (as of yesterday) . I had my surgery on Friday 5/19. I went to the Dr about it for the first time in January. Mainly what took me so long to get it was because I'm in school so I waited until the end of the semester. They were awesome getting my insurance to pay for it. I went in expecting to pay or of pocket because I don't have any common health problems that they require before coverage. My Dr sent me to get a sleep study done. It was a leap of faith because that would be an extra $1000+ out of pocket if no avail. But, alas I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea! I use an exclamation point because that was enough for insurance to pay!! So 5 months later and only $4000-ish out of pocket rather than $13000, I'm a happy girl. I'm so glad I finally made the leap to do it. I've been secretly wanting bariatric surgery (I got the gastric sleeve) for as long as I've known about it. No regrets. I can't wait to be able to get back in the gym! My ultimate goal is to do body building (not extreme or anything) because the gym is my second home.

I had to go through 6 months of nutritionist, test, psych weight loss, all sorts of things, so by the time all of that was done I was more than ready to have it done, I had the bypass and so glad I did

Thank you Christine, It is good to hear that you are happy you had the surgery and that you were scared too. I have tried the Premier and I like it. I see the dietitian next week again. I have struggled with my eating lately as I got bronchitis and sinus infection and am trying to get back on track. Hopefully I will be able to go for a walk today as I have been too dizzy to walk lately. I am hoping to get an idea in the next few appointments as to how long I will have to wait for surgery. I started this journey last fall and have had multiple infections of bronchitis, pneumonia and sinus infections and having to delay with caring for my ill Mother. Mom is moving to assisted living today so I am hoping to focus on myself more now and recover from the illness. Thank you for your support!
