Newbie questions ... docs here don't understand

Hi there,

I had the gastric sleeve surgery on 7/11/2017. There was no pain associated with the surgery but I've been having problems since the surgery. The Bariatric Institute here as well as the staff said they don't know how to answer these questions as they have not seen a case like me before.

I did the 2 week pre-op diet (powdered meals) which really had my blood sugars out of whack. I had been taking Topomax to help lose weight for the surgery. I didn't stop the Topomax until the day before the surgery.

After the surgery during the 2 week liquid phase I was extremely hungry, and I do mean hungry. I wasn't craving anything. I didn't want a steak or a cheese burger. I was legitimately hungry. I was going over the suggested amount of fluids per day (suggested was 64 oz. and I was up to 160-180 oz. per day) and still hungry. When I called to ask about this I was told to start taking the Topomax again. I did not.

I started this process 2 years ago and at the time there was a different book for the procedure which would have included mashed potatoes, soup, etc... for the 2 week post op. I changed to that and I was fine. I was no longer hungry all the time.

However, at the 2 week post op visit I was advanced to the next stage. This is the soft food stage (the old book shows soft foods, new book shows pureed foods). I am still following the old book guidelines but now I notice that I throw up a lot and I am still hungry more often than not.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you get through it? More importantly, are you losing weight? I weighed myself today and it is 1 week past my last appointment and I have not lost weight.

Please advise.

Kind Regards,
Michelle

Hey Michelle,
I was hoping someone would have something in common and have responded by now, but I think you are just unique in the issues your facing since surgery. o_O I did want to tell you that I just recently started adding a 'good fats' oil to my protein shakes, and haven't had any hunger whatsoever. I don't know if that will help you, but it might? I started it because I haven't been advanced to the next phase yet, (due to a major repair, I can't swallow most things while it is healing) so I'm on a basic liquid diet with very small amounts of yogurt, cottage cheese & applesauce. I had an RN tell me I needed to add 'good fats' to make sure my overall nutrition was balanced and to help with my nausea and not eating real food at the moment. I can't swallow peanut butter, avocado, or well any of the 'good fats' but I can consume the oil. It has been 5 days of using it, and I've had no hunger, the nausea is little better but still sticking around. I was at a standstill last week with weight loss as well but after these past 5 days I've started losing weight again. I know that we aren't exactly in the same boat, you having the sleeve and I've had bypass, but maybe this could help you? I hope things have improved since you've posted these questions!
