2 Month Surgeon's Office Visit

Yesterday was my two month post op visit to the surgeon's office. I was weighed first and lost 8 more pounds. (Truthfully, I was a little disappointed because at home, I was under that) . My Dr. said he was very happy with my progress and said that 8 lbs was very good and added to my previous weight loss was 28 lbs down from my surgery. I had also lost weight previously waiting for the hospital's elective surgery unit to open and on the pre-surgery diet. He said that I could now swallow whole capsule Rx's and didn't have to open them up and put the contents in applesauce anymore. The nutritionist was again in his office and he walked me to her and said before leaving to make an appt in one month. Well the nutritionist went over the last of the phases in my booklet and said that I could now slowly reintroduce everything back into my program. She said to only introduce one new food a day so I would know if something didn't agree with me, I would know it right away and to wait a week and try it again. If it still didn't agree with me to write it down and we'll go over it next month. Also, she said to wait about 2-3 weeks more weeks before adding rice or pasta. I told her that I'm actually a little scared about adding everything back in and she said that many people agree with me. Since my surgery, I have been sticking to the different phases 100% and have never gotten nauseous or vomited. I hate the thought of getting sick now, but know that I eventually have to return to adding items back into my life. All in all it was a great visit.

Great news. Glad you are doing/feeling well. I was also scared to introduce new foods and honestly still eat a lot of softer foods, just because they sit better. I introduced new foods 1 ounce at a time. That way, if it didn't agree with me, at least it wouldn't take long coming back up lol And I am still very scared of becoming overly full. That has seemed to work pretty well for me. Good Luck!

Awesome! Sounds like things are going well. Not even having had the surgery yet, I’m worried about foods. I’m supposed to do one week post op of liquids, then move into pureed foods for 3 weeks! I’m like, can I do 2 weeks of liquid and 2 pureed? I might anyways just to make sure things are settled and healing before moving on. I’m probably being overly cautious with my gallbladder coming out too, but I’d rather err on the side of caution!

What a great idea!! I will start with an ounce at a time, too for your same reasons. I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. Last night, I had a couple of bites of a Kind protein bar and didn't have any problems. My nutritionist suggested that I buy the mini protein bars and always keep one in my purse, in case I'm delayed somewhere or feel really hungry. Today, I bought a package of them, very small steps, but I'm trying!!

Everybody's post diet program is different. (I originally thought that we all went through the same program, but reading other people's stories, I've learned different) I had two weeks of liquids, the 1st being clear, except for shakes and then all liquids. Then, pureed for two weeks. I just know that you are going to do just fine. Isn't your surgery coming up soon? Good luck.

So, my surgeon took a longer and more conservative approach to recovery. I had a full 1 month of liquid diet, and then a month of puree diet. My surgeon told me that he was different from other surgeons in this regard, but STRONGLY encouraged me to stick with his routine. He said that his routine was not just about letting the body heal from the surgery, but also allowing my brain to adjust to the new conditions in my body, and to allow me time to change my relationship with food.

I stuck to that program religously, until the last few days of the puree diet, then I finally started to cheat, just a little! That is when I discovered that chips ans salsa (one of my all time favorite snacks) would almost put me in the ER because of the painful stomach spasms brought on by the acidity of the salsa. Oof! Hard lesson learned.

Anyway, long story short, my recovery has been EXTREMELY successful! Thanks to my surgeons plan, my cravings were minimal and I successfully changed my relationship with food. In 9 months, I am down 118 lbs, and I feel FANTASTIC!

CONGRATS on your 2nd successful month of recovery and good luck to all of us, as we journey towards healthy living!
