3 weeks out - Reflux and Weight Loss Stall

Hey guys!
The dreaded 3 week stall has hit me hard. NO WEIGHT LOSS for 7 days. 7 days it's been going up and down 0.8lbs. I was always told if you ate less you'd lose weight, so I seriously don't understand why I'd be keeping the weight on when I eat basically nothing hahahaha. I mean - 600-800 calories a day, and mostly protein!
Also - the reflux is killing me. I knew going into this that some people get reflux with the sleeve - and I've experienced it infrequently in the past - but this is like reflux on steroids! I almost called an ambulance the other night because I thought I was having a heart attack! There was chest pain and sweating and nausea it was terrible - the only reason I knew it was heartburn was because I kept coughing up bile. Gross sorry.
Anyways - any tips for those with heartburn issues? Dr. said I could take a morning and evening omeprazole and tums. IDK how I feel about taking it twice a day though!
And then the stall - how long does this last haha!?

I’m so sorry you are experiencing acid reflux. That is my #1 fear and worry ever since I had surgery in April. I had GERD for years before surgery so I remember how miserable it was. What sounds different are your symptoms of severe chest pain, sweating and nausea. It sounds just like dumping syndrome, but I’m sure you would remember if you ate something sweet or high in fat.

I’m not a doctor, but Omeprazole twice a day sounds like a lot. I stopped taking Omeprazole on day 30 after surgery, but then I decided to take Famotidine daily because I was getting a tiny feeling of reflux when I drink my morning shake. Famotidine is milder and can be taken long term without risk or side effects. Maybe you should ask your doctor about it.

I hate that your acid reflux is so severe. I definitely would check with the bariatric team. I was given a 1 month prescription for omeprazole and told to take it once daily, even though I had the gastric bypass to help prevent GERD, rather than the sleeve. I faithfully took it daily that 1st month, but now I only use it rarely.

As far as the stall, it probably is not going to last long. I always ask if people are weighing themselves more than once weekly. It will not do anything more than make you feel badly about your progress (or temporary lack of). Please track your weight once weekly. Record the difference from last week's weight, and to keep things in perspective, the difference from your pre-surgery weight. Keep adding to this every week. The stall WILL not last, as long as you get in your 64+ozs of water and 60+gms of protein daily, as well as incorporating some type of daily movement if possible.

You've come so far. You will lose the weight. You will reach some or all of your goals, including more stamina, better health, wearing smaller sized clothes and SHOES!!! You've got this, sweetie. ❤❤❤❤

Be careful of taking Omeprazole so much and for long periods. Read the side affects, talk to your Dr, then YOU decide if it's worth the trade-off.

thanks so much! Super encouraging. Yeah I've definitely been good about the protein but having a much harder time with the water for sure. But to be fair, I never drank that many fluids in my life haha. I'm trying to be more conscious of needing water - like noticing if my mouth gets dry and stuff.
Thank you!

I found that once I started being well hydrated I just naturally began to want to drink more water. Fingers crossed the same is true for you!

I am one who ended up with acid reflux post surgery. I take meds twice a day, 40mg each time. As needed I use papaya enzyme. The alternative is let it be without meds and let it potentially get severe enough it causes cancer. Take your pick.

There is another "alternative". Omaprazole is very bad long term. Athough it is commonly perscribed, high doeses long term leech the calcium in your bones. I know this because I have been on it. If you have osteoporosis, this makes things worse - so IF you choose to take the O, you MUST also take a calcium supplement long term.

Calcium is something that was prescribed long term regardless.

i'm so glad you mentioned this. I actually kept filling my prescription for years, in case i needed it.

then i found a news story about a 10-year controlled study in the UK where the researchers concluded that there's a high probability of developing dementia if taking omeprazole for the long term. i immediately tapered off and haven't used it since.

of course, omeprazole and ondansetran are the scientific names for labeled OTC pills--zantac and something, can't remember.

but we did a serious thing to control our eating disorders and symtoms: we had surgery. it doesn't make sense to also have to take medication. do a lot of research on this like i did, and determine what's right for you, and what you're willing to risk.
Absolutely! That's why I keep trying to warn people, but sadly I'm getting a lot of pushback. I KNOW it's often a trade of one evil for another - but this stuff is baaaad, as bad as ranitadine was! I know reflux is awful, that was the whole purpose of my WLS. I don't know what the answer is, but having to take one medicine to "counter" another medicine - isn't a solution. I was on FOUR a day for several years, and I never, ever got better. Finally, and I'm not advocating for anyone else to do this without medical advice - I took myself off. I have osteoporosis - and this med did a LOT of damage, even with the calcium supplements I took. Add to that, demetia runs in the family.

I was on ranitidine for years before surgery, I was also on calcium ab d3 supplements after knee replacement in 2011. I was told bypass was the best solution for anyone who had reflux before WLS. I was prescribed pantropazole for after surgery, I can say I have had no issues with heartburn. Never thought about seeing if I could stop taking it. Good question for next dr consult. Will add to my medical file. Btw dementia /Alzheimer’s runs in my family too. Oh goody. May you find the solution for you and your dr.
