4 days post op

Hi there. I am 4 days post op. Im struggling with wanting to drink more water. So do you have a rule of thumb for taking sips? Also how soon after a sip can I take another. Same goes for jello. Im finally moving past some massive bloating finally. Did you nap a lot after surgery?
I had a massive surgery because I had esophagus surgery (Nissan Funduplication) in 2001 and they had to take that down. They also uncovered a softball sized hernia in my esophagus so they had to make me a new esophagus out of my excess stomach and made my esophagus twice as long. Anyone else have any other issues like this?
Last question. How long did your incision feel very sore?

Thanks so much!

What kind of surgery did you have - sleeve or RNY? I would recommend taking sips and having a bottle near you throughout the day. I keep one on my nightstand so if I wake in the middle of the night, I have some. You can also add some cucumber slices, or lemon and lime slices.

I didn’t have the pleasure of napping after surgery. I took 3 days off from work and had to go back. I think this helped spread my recovery because I was active. My incisions didn’t feel sore, but everyone’s experience is different.

Hope you feel better soon.

I wasn't too sore but I just had a standard bypass, none of the extras you had to deal with. For the first week, I filled up shot glasses and sipped one every 15 minutes I was awake, as recommended by my doc. By week 2 I just kept a bottle with me and sipped pretty much continuously. As long as you are not getting too full or causing yourself pain, you can sip as often as you are comfortable doing so. I did nap a lot after surgery. Sleep allows your body to rest and regenerate so if you are feeling sleepy, go ahead and take a nap. Hope you're doing well.

Hi GoCougs welcome and congrats on your surgery! Like Missy, I too was instructed to use shot glasses on a schedule the first few days. Then day 5 I could skip that and increase my liquid intake. I too had hernia repair but I had some other stuff going as as well so while I started with laparoscopic surgery, I wound up with open surgery a couple weeks later. Not because of the sleeve but because of other complications. So I had been through quite a bit and napped constantly! Anytime you have surgery and have anesthesia, that is to be expected. Go with it if you can as it is your body's way to heal. As for soreness, that took me a while because I had open surgery. Was yours open or laparoscopic?

I didnt have any sorness either. What I had was in the incision right by my belly button. If you had all that other stuff done, it stands to reason why you might be sore.

I was sent home with a couple of sleeves of cups and did sips for well over 2 weeks but thats also because I had a severe sore throught for that long. Some people can go back to normal water consumption soon after and others can't. What is important is to pay attention to how it feels when you drink and pace yourself based on that.

Initially my instructions were to sip 1oz of water then 1oz of protein drink every 15 minutes for the first few days. I'd say I kept that up for the first four, and then started increasing the oz I was drinking (I had VSG) bit by bit, but kept the amounts pretty small, but consistent through the day.

I napped quite a bit the first few days since I was still taking a bit of pain meds, but I also felt fairly energetic and walked a lot. I think everyone's experience will vary in that regard.

The incision where they took my stomach out was pretty sore for the first week, and tender for a week or so after that, but it wasn't too bad. I imagine that would vary a lot from person to person as well. You had an especially intense surgery it looks like, so I would think that would make your experience pretty unique compared to some others. I had a hiatal hernia repair, but nothing close to that. It was probably the most painful part of my surgery though as far as where I felt pain afterward. Most of my pain was gone after the first week, but others experience it quite a bit longer.

Take it easy and stay in contact with your bariatric team as you go. I hope you heal quickly!!
