6 days post op

Hi! I’m new here. I can’t get in 64 oz of water and 3 protein shakes a day. The only thing that sounds good is creamy soup or popsicles, sugar free of course. I’m still in pain from my surgery and am worried about not getting enough protein to start healing. I’m starting to panic a bit wondering if I made a huge mistake but now it’s permanent. Anyone else feel this way? Thanks for any tips, advice or encouragement.

I am 7 days post op and have hit the wall with the protein shakes. Thinning them out with water has helped me a lot, though more volume to consume. I tried extracts. Banana...strawberry. Cinnamon has helped. Reminds me of drinking the leftover milk from Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. I have been drinking Gatorade zero or Powerade zero. My understanding is the fluid ounces in the protein shakes do count towards your water intake but check with your surgeons office. Hang in there. I'm really hoping once nurse professes to the puréed stage we can get enough protein in from real food.

I'm 6 days post-op today. My barbaric team advised that the your protein shakes count toward your water goal. So does your soup, popsicles, etc.
I also add Isopure UNFLAVORED Protein Powder to my soups before heating. Hope this helps

Hi Teachermom, I had an issue with the creamy protein shakes. I switched to "clear protein", like Isopure, that I can mix with anything and have had a much easier time meeting my daily requirements for water and protein for the first weeks post surgery. It may take some testing to see what your system can tolerate, maybe try a bit at a time to see how you tolerate it. Always check in with your medical team when in doubt. Make sure you meet with your nutritionist soon so you know your ins/outs. ALWAYS check the sugar content on any protein shakes/products that you consider using. Too many of them advert that they are low sugar, when they are anything but. Good luck.

Please double-check with YOUR bariatric support team to confirm that your understanding is correct for YOUR situation. And, whatever they advise, follow it. It is fine to seek out opinions online, but in the end they are ones that know your medical history and needs. Best of luck to you.

Wow. Memories. My bypass was 25 years ago. I forgot what it was like. Did they offer a support group? Maybe just here. I HATE to say hang in there, it'll get easier. That doesn't help. Don't beat yourself up. Noone can do it perfectly. Just keep sharing!

I had to split my protein shakes into more than 3 meals for some of the time after surgery. Having cold water for my sips was a big help.

I'm sorry, but your team is misinformed. Water is a specific type of liquid that performs a unique function in digestion. All bariatric teams require 6 to 8 glasses of water every day for a reason. If you don't drink it, you can cause serious harm to organs that need it and are deprived of it if you don't drink plain water. Check with the American Bariatrics website, the FDA site, or any website that explains fluid intake after surgery. I have heard that popsicles are okay to count as liquid, but only as a small part of your fluid intake.

But each person's fluid intake need varies, so your best bet is to check with a licensed nutritionist or dietician. And keep track daily, in a journal, every substance you put in your body, and graph a corresponding weight fluctuation.

I know water is a contentious issue for many people, but it's pretty easy to meet your fluid goal if you measure it in advance, then pour out small amounts as you need them. In so doing, you can easily make it through the day.
I have to disagree. Some guidelines have changed over time. My dietician and surgeon all include protein shakes, decaff beverages that are allowed and protein shakes in my liquid count with a goal of 64 oz of liquids in a day.
