I had my vertical sleeve gastrectomy on Wednesday. Everything went extremely well, and I am recovering. The pain was not too bad, 3-4 on a 10-scale, and tapering down. The liquid diet is ok. I have only had water and diluted apple juice so far. The worst pain has been from back spasms (I am assuming this is stress, that's usually why I get them), and gas. The gas pain has been a real bitch.
A little about me, I am a 45 year old man, in Southern California. I am 6'0", and my highest weight was 348 lbs. I hit 348 in 2016, before going on a medically supervised weight loss program and lost 100 lbs. I had to do that program, because my insurance would not approve gastric banding unless I did that first.
Then, over the last 3 years, I found all the weight I lost. So... here I am!
I did A LOT of research before I had my surgery, with a lot of reading, podcasts, and interviewing multiple surgeons. I am a scientist by trade, so I took a very methodical approach to this decision. I am actually glad I waited, as there was a lot more information about gastric banding, and I determined it likely would not have worked well for me. Hence, the sleeve.
I wish I had found this forum before I had the surgery; you probably could have saved me some time and research. I am very appreciative that there are forums out here and people that know what I am going through.
I have decided to take a 6 week leave of absence from work, while I recover and adjust to my new normal. (Thank goodness for disability insurance!) I just got married in October 2019 to a beautiful regular weight woman, so there is some learning we both have to do together.
Anyway, looking forward to reading more about everyone's journey, and sharing mine! Thanks for being here!
