Clothing after surgery

I'm less than a month away from my surgery date and I was wondering what I'll do when I start losing the weight? I can't afford to buy numerous clothes and would rather not since I may not stay one weight for long as I transition. I've been reading online and see a few ideas that might work (thrift stores, borrowing from friends, etc.) but thought I'd ask here too. I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a bunch of leggings to start with and go from there. Any suggestions appreciated.

Wish I could wear those on the daily but I got to dress somewhat appropriate for work. I think the leggings are going to be the best bet for awhile. I'll probably have my mother-in-law do some alterations on my clothes. Plus I have some clothes that are in my closet that I wouldn't wear because they felt to tight so maybe I can get away with those for the first few weeks. It is a good problem but I foresee it to be an issue eventually and wondered what would be the best way to tackle it. ;)

Hi guys,

I'm 4.5 months post-op and seem to go down a size every 6-8 weeks so I'm in the middle of this financial dilemma. I've been stocking up on tees, tanks & leggings. I've found that at Kohls, Old Navy & JCP with sales & coupons you can get these really cheap. For work, I purchased a few jackets and cardigans that are too small for me to button up now but that I can wear open over over the inexpensive tanks and tees. Those items were a little more money (still inexpensive sale items) but these will transition with me through the next 2 sizes.

You will also go through your bras and undies quickly so you'll want to watch for sales on those as well. Hanes and/or Fruit of the Loom multi-pack, cotton undies go on sale at Target and Walmart often. If you see a good sale, get in your current size and the next one down! For bras, I watch for clearance at Lane Bryant on Cacique. Ordered 2 last week for $15 each (a HUGE markdown).

Keeping to these basics, I'm still spending less on clothes than I was at restaurants & on pizza/fast food before surgery.

One last thing to share, Dressbarn announced that they will be going out of business. I'm sad about it because they always carried the same styles in plus sizes as they did "regular" sizes. Hard to find. Anyway, I'm sure in the near future, they will be marking down inventory significantly. I'll make sure to post something when they do!

Good luck in your journeys!

Thanks for those ideas. I probably have quite a few clothes to get me through for the first couple of months.
There is a DressBarn just about a mile from me so I will have to go check it out.

And I did "splurge" a week ago... Lands End was having a dress sale so I ordered 2, one for $19.99 and the other was $24.99. So deals are out there. And this purchase came with an ego boost, I ordered both in a large, figuring they'd fit in a month or so but they fit now!!! I can't remember the last time I wore a large. :)

I had a splurge today in JCP, work pants, sandals and black skinny jeans, 4 SIZES SMALLER

Hi Cory, Editor. I think almost everyone you could name has at least a few outfits hanging in their closet that they are positive they're going to be able to wear one day. I know I have, and ended up giving them away. But shopping at thrift stores can be incredibly fun and the prices might surprise you. At least in Seattle, it's amazing how the prices vary according to the charity or business the store represents. The Salvation Army store on 4th Avenue is way overpriced. The Saint Vincent de Paul store on 1st Avenue South is perfect and has great clothing. The Bridle Trails store in Redmond is a combination of fabulous clothes and reasonable prices. I think probably 50% of my clothes my linens and everything in my kitchen came from St. Vincent de Paul. Even the pants and boots in this picture came off St Vincent's rack.

Diane, You look great! I am pre-surgery and didn't really think about the clothes issue. Last year I finally gave up on the small clothes and donated them. I think I will try the good will or if I can find a St. Vincents in my area. Thank you for your advice.

I bought all different size tee shirts for $1 from walmart and every time I see clothes for $1 I buy it. The worst that happens is I wear it a few times and donate it, after all it was only $1. I wear jeggings, which I did not do before but if they're a little tight it doesn't matter because they'll be the right size sooner than later. There really should be a way for bariatric patients to pass clothing along to other patients because we don't wear them very long anyway.

The surgeon that I am using has a weight-loss support group. MOST of the members are bariatric surgery patients, and they have a clothing closet. I don't know where you live, but I bet if you could find a support group on facebook or something, they would probably have a clothing closet as well. Lots of churches have clothing closets that are overflowing too. Luckily, I have just about every size from a 30W down to a size 10. My mom just lost a ton of weight and has been saving her clothes for me.
