Coffee

I was never told to stay away from caffeine. I'm not a coffee drinker but have been drinking Diet Snapple Lemon iced tea since about week 2. I drink water most of the day but have about 2 bottles of these a day.

I've been drinking coffee and tea - decaf only - since I went on the pre-surgery diet. The only thing I'm not supposed to drink is soda or anything with caffeine. The carbonation can cause ulcers in your pouch. I went through a rough spot when everything I ate - even broth - came back up. I was told to drink flat soda - it didn't matter - that came back up too.

Some people are more sensitive to caffeine that can be dehydrating and the coffee acid which can upset your stomach. You can drink coffee, caffeinated or not, if you can tolerate it (as others have said, I'd ask doctor/dietician when it might be appropriate to add back in). There are some good decafs out there, you just have to experiment. I found one that I like and that's all I drink now. The only caffeine I've had since surgery has been a bit of black tea, but mostly I drink non-black teas now and decaf coffee. It can be hard to find a good one that meets your taste, but my wife didn't think she'd like any decaf and she is happy with what I found. We'll often have that in the evening instead of our traditional black tea. Of course, the taste of anything is subjective.

I did have a cup of regular coffee recently and nothing negative happened, but I seem to be able to eat absolutely the same things I did prior to surgery at this point, including very spicy foods, etc. That being said, I avoid the caffeine anyway, I feel stimulated enough these days, although not being able to do my walks because of the air quality here has really sucked.

I was told to avoid any carbonated beverages. At times I do miss Diet Coke. Definitely looking forward to coffee again soon.
Yes, carbonated beverages are a definite no-no. I'm a year and 6 months out and recently had a diet ginger ale. Big mistake, was up all night with terrible stomach pain, likely gas. Everyone is different but I won't put myself through that again!

Just wondering what brand of decaf coffee you are drinking? I just started drinking half calf and I am looking to switch to fully decaf soon. My surgery isn’t until Jan but I’m trying to make any positive changes to my diet early that will help me in the long run.

Ryan, I have been wondering how things are by you? I'm glad to hear you are safe and obviously haven't been evacuated yet. It seems really scary out there. Diane has said her air quality is not great either. You guys safe safe!!

My favorite decaf right now is KIVU hazelnut, which is a light roast. Although I didn't normally buy light roasts in the past, for some reason the decaf works better for me in a light roast than medium or dark. KIVU is available at Fred Meyer/Kroger stores. It might even be a brand of theirs, I don't know.

We are currently at Level 1 evacuation status, we were at Level 3, and had the winds not changed, we were probably a few hours from Level 3 evacuation. We were going to leave preemptively at Level 2 because things weren't looking good, but we decided to stay put. The weather shifted, and things have been getting better where we are each day, but there is still a lot of people, property and forest in danger. The big fires will probably be burning until the winter rains come.

It is still quite smoky. You can't really know if it's fog, smoke, or a combination of both out there during the day. It seems to get a bit better each day though, but if the winds change back to coming from the east, that will probably be a whole new ballgame again.

I was told not to drink coffee after post op. I can’t stand the taste of decaf. How long after your surgery did you start drinking coffee again? I’m having a major coffee withdrawal!
my notes say caffeine is a stomach irritant and should be limited once you are able to take in adequate fluids without difficulty you may add some caffeine back into your diet. I found a good decaf coffee called Pete's, give that a try.

I’ve tried decaf chocolate raspberry and hazelnut. Both taste so different from regular.
