Dinner is Served

Your mouth isn't the only part of your mind, body, spirit that eats food. Your mind eats first as you select and prepare your food. Then your eyes. And, then your nose. Your mouth is pretty much a latecomer to the party.

How/where do you eat? At the table? Why? Why not? You can take care with your nourishment whether you live alone or with family.

Do you want music with your meal? No, acid rock is not conducive to digestion, nor is anything else at 80 or 90 decibels.

Do you set your table, complete with wine glasses or water goblets? You don't have to fill them; if they're cobalt or ruby or some other color, you'll likely not notice whether they're filled or empty but it makes the setting look complete. And cut glass or similar crystal wine or water glasses won't necessarily appear empty, either. You can fill them with water, if you wish. You can even add a drop of red food coloring, if that seems like the thing to do. Just remember, you don't want to drink with your meal.

Do you use a tablecloth? Or Placemats? Cloth Napkins? Napkin Rings?

Do you use fine china? Why not? You say it's in the cupboard, waiting for some special occasion or "company"? Why? Is there someone more special than you and/or your family? Really? I don't think so.

Are you using matching tableware? A "complete" setting? So what if you don't need a spoon or a knife, set it anyway. Knife Rests? Finger Bowls?

You don't need to have any serving dishes on the table. That leaves more room for table adornment, like candles (nothing scented, please) and/or a centerpiece. Fresh flowers?

Do you "dress" for dinner? Why? Why not?

Do you watch tv while you eat? (egads! I hope not) Read a book? (also not a good idea) You want to be mindful of what and why you're eating, not zoned out doing something else at the same time.

What special things have you done/bought yourself directly related to food or food service since your wls or in preparation for your wls? New table linen? New china? Many wls patients eat their "new" reduced-size meals on a salad plate. That means you could use a "regular" 9" or 10" plate as a charger.

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Lots of food for thought here. Please jump in and add your own thoughts on the matter.

Wow, that is a lot to think about. Me, I'm still in the liquid only phase so planning to sit down dinner is a bit off in the future. I will say that prior to surgery, my wife and I always had dinner together at the table.
