Experiment gone wrong... severe pain...

Everything has been going so well, I got cocky. I have been trying new foods, some I like, some I don't. I fell off the wagon.

Tonight I tried chips and salsa, one of my weaknesses. It went very bad. I started feeling bloated. I tried going to the bathroom, but it didn't help, it got worse.after an hour, I had severe stomach and back pain, radiating from right below my sternum. I got nauseous, and tried to vomit, but just got dry heaves. That made the pain several factors worse.

I scared the hell out of my wife. I was about to have her take me to emergency, convinced I hadn't chewed a chip enough and it was stuck sideways.

Then I had my wife text my surgeon, and he called bank immediately. He suggested Tums, warm water, and a heat pad. If the pain did not subside in 30 min, go to emergency.

The Tums helped almost immediately, the water and heat bag did too. Almost back to normal now, and had to share.

Lessons Learned:

1 Stay on your diet. Seriously, just do it.
2 Keep Tums handy.
3 Chips & Salsa = BAD

Effective immediately, back on my prescribed diet.

Thanks for letting me share this.

That happens to me sometimes too mostly if I eat too much at once . Also meat and breads don’t agree with me much . But today I had half a flat bread pepperoni pizza from Cheesecake Factory and I was fine a little later some watermelon and a sugar free Klondike bar and I feel fine . I don’t get it. And yeah I know eating wrong foods pizza and ice cream but wanted a treat for a change. I can eat chips but no salsa also. I’m 3 months out since surgery

Thanks for actually sharing a weakness. Some wouldn’t for fear of judgment but I want you to know I appreciate hearing this. I’m 6 days post op. How far post op are you? I have had some cravings that have seemed weird. One has been Tomatoes. I have always loved eating tomatoes on sandwiches or just alone as a snack. I wonder if the reason the salsa caused so much pain was the acidity of the tomato? Have you had anything else you have tried give you pain? Was it acidic? Just wondering because maybe I need to avoid tomatoes when I get to that stage too! I was thinking about how a tomato salsa could add flavor without too many calories to my puréed stage foods like eggs or beans.

Krystalized, you are welcome, but honestly I have been posting here for weeks, and I have never felt judged for anything. This is a very safe space.

I am 7.5 weeks post-op. I think the acidity was definitely part of the problem. Of course it was a "medium" salsa, so likely there were peppers that didn't help. Early on I tried a tomato soup that did not sit well in my stomach, and resulted in dumping. But nowhere near the pain from last night. But I have had tomatoes mixed with cottage cheese that was just fine.

At 6 days, my advice still stands, stick to your diet plan! Don't deviate. Eventually you will be able to experiment, but now is too soon, In my opinion.

Things were going so well for me, that I thought I could step away from the plan. I was wrong!
