family dinner Italian style

Today was the first day since my sugery that I have been around so much Italian food. Macaroni and meatball, eggplant parm, stuffed mushroom, antipasto, vinagar chicken and the list goes on. I am Italian and grew up eating these foods. Every Sunday our whole family would go to my grandma's house for dinner. She lived in a one bedroom apartment in the Bronx, but I didn't realize this until I got older. I learned who I was around that table. My grandfather would tell stories of when he came to this country by himself when he was 12 and would eat watermelon rinds in the basement of a building. My grandmother survived the Triangle Fire in NYC. I would sit on my grandfather's lap and watch him peel fruit with his pocket knife. These were such wonderful memories. Today there were many generations around the table. My Dad is 93 and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were all there. All the stories were being told and some I had never heard before. It was so wonderful to focus on the family and not the food. After I served everyone, I went and had my yogart. I was not tempted in the least to eat anything. My focus was on my family and how blessed I have been. I guess the message I want to put out there is when the addictive mind stops you have the opportunity to enjoy everthing else.

KIM-How truly blessed you are for having such a large and wonderful family. It must be nice to be able to gather together and enjoy each other's company. I can remember when I was younger that a week didn't go by without family dropping by. Things are a lot different now with all of the senior matriarch's gone. Most of my family now consists of neice's and nephew's and their children. Most of them live in an electronic world and rarely want to visit with family except if they are graduating from school or have a birthday. Maybe I should throw a cookout just to see how many show up (and yes there will be pasta but not for me) :) :) :)

Absolutley wonderful Kim! so true what you said about the addictive mind stopping. When you quit focusing on food, you have the chance to enjoy everything else! I soooo want to be there too! I'm so happy for you!Melissa
