Gallstones

I did a search for gallstones on this site because my Ultrasound this morning confirmed I have gallstones. I knew something was wrong when the pain on my right side would not go away. I waited perhaps longer than I should have. I don't like to go to Dr's but finally made the call after the symptoms got worse. I will talk to my Dr. tomorrow

From what I have read on this site I will request my gallbladder be removed if that is an option. Unless anyone here can give me a reason not to. The Dr. told me that more than of a 1/3 of his patients get gallstones.

Please be aware that you are at higher risk for gallstones after weight loss surgery. And contact your Dr. right away if you have any of the symptom's which can be varied. Mine developed as a pain below my right ribcage and intermittent pain in my upper back. I also noticed lower energy and some change in my bowel movements. Educate yourself so you can be treated sooner rather than later. I have to say it is a relief to find out what was causing all the weird things going on in my body.

I had GB almost 3 months ago and have had great success and feel so much better overall it is definitely worth it. Not easy but worth it!!

Thank goodness my gallbladder was already removed before WLS. I agree that sudden rapid weight loss often leads to gallstones, and some surgeons remove the gallbladder at the same time as WLS if there is the slightest indication of possible gallstones.

If mine hadn't already been gone, I would have begged for its removal during WLS. That's how incredibly painful my gallstones were. Good luck with your situation.

James, I am sorry to hear you're having this problem so soon after surgery. I had already had my gallbladder removed before WLS so, I was lucky not to have that issue. I see no reason to not have your gallbladder removed. It's a fairly easy surgery and recovery and solves the problem forever. Good luck.

I soooo appreciate the feedback and suspect this has been a problem far longer than I realized. I'm patiently waiting for my Dr. who is only 15 minutes late at this point. My bloodwork test were posted this and there is only a couple test that are slightly out of range which I suspect the Dr. will not have any concerns. Once again if I have a vote I will opt to remove my gallbladder.

Hi James, sorry to hear about your gallstones! I had my gallbladder removed 31 years ago after the birth of my second daughter. That was when they were still doing it the old way, with the long diagonal incision across your entire abdomen! I never had any regrets about having it removed though. Good luck!

I wish I could be helpful answering that James. Since my gallbladder came out at the same time as my WLS it’s hard to determine what was what. I did feel more discomfort around the area where is came out rather than where the biggest part of the WLS was preformed. But my surgeon seemed to think that I lost quickly my first month because of the gallbladder removal. Not sure if he had any evidence other than anecdotal.
