Gastric Sleeve - Now what?

A_NewMe

Member
I went to Mexico to get my sleeve done and was given very broad instructions for when i return home. I have lost 36lbs in 6 weeks, and that was after a 2 1/2 week stall. I am now eating soft to regular foods and getting my protein in and most of my water. I just want to start learning how to eat for the rest of my life and exercise to help with body image.

Focus on:
  • 64oz to over 100oz of water per day
  • Adequate protein
  • Unprocessed foods
  • Minimal sugar and sodium
  • For exercise, do something that you can commit to easily and doesn't feel like a burden. Movement is important, but it doesn't have to be extreme at all. Walking is a great example, as well as body weight exercises. You don't need to go to a gym, have any equipment or anything like that. The most important thing is to keep moving. Joints and mobility are of great important for long term quality of life. You don't have to exercise to lose weight, but it is important over overall health, quality of life and longevity.
  • Confront any body image, emotional eating or addiction issues with a counselor, if necessary.
  • Don't be concerned about stalls and plateaus, they will happen over and over again. They can last for weeks and sometimes months, but the most important thing to do in these cases is to continue to make good food choices and continue regular movement. That doesn't mean it won't be frustrating, but keep in mind that it is part of the journey.
  • Continue to be involved with support groups like this and others.

One of my daughters had her surgery in Egypt. She didn't speak the language and her surgeon didn't speak English. She found a cab/uber driver that spoke basic English. He took her to the hospital for surgery then drove her back "home" 6 hours or so after surgery. Jessica - my daughter - was given NO diet NO information of any kind. She was back at work less than 12 hours after her sleeve surgery. Jessica now lives in NY and has lost so much weight. She had to figure a lot of things out for herself.

You should attempt to drink 64oz of water/liquid daily. Protein consumption will vary by doctor. A lot of people in this group were instructed to consume 60-70 grams of protein daily. I was instructed to consume 60-90 grams of protein daily. Some people feel that you must drink a minimum of 64oz of plain water daily. My surgical team counts ALL liquids I drink in my total for the day.

I swim A LOT for exercise. I also ride bikes and go to the park with my girls to walk. We have a pond for our furbabies - when i need a serious workout - I'll take 3 of my furbabies to the pond for them to swim and play serious fetch - catch - crazy! They wear me out!

My typical food day - I always eat my protein first. I make certain that my breakfast is pure protein - I've never been a breakfast person - I don't eat eggs so this is what my nutritionist and I came up with. It works for me.

Sometimes I have room for other foods like cucumbers or cauliflower - and there are times that I don't.

This is what I ate yesterday. I log my food on MyFitnessPal - my nutritionist and others on my surgical team can go in and see what I'm eating - or have been eating. This is my version of a food journal.

Congratulations on this exciting new life journey. Talk to others about what they eat/drink/exercise - figure out what will work for you!
