Hi brand new here

Hi everyone I am brand new. I have my first appointment with Dr. On Thursday. I am so excited! I have wanted this for a long time and I'm taking my first steps to actually doing it. I have quit smoking (day one) I started to see a nutritionist two weeks ago. She put me on a No carb diet. But I received some info from Dr.s office which said to start their one shake for breakfast and lunch small piece of lean meat 1-2 cups veggy diet NOW. My Dr. Almost always only dose the sleeve I have heard. But since reading stuff today it seems that people are recommending the by pass surgery for people with diabetes? I also have really bad sleep apnea and have to use oxygen as well as cpap at night. I am 55 will be 56 next month and My bmi is 60.2. You all are so gracious with all the good advice and I appreciate being able to go online and read what everyone has to say thank you! So anyone have any advice for me?

Welcome to the group and congrats on starting your journey! It is definitely a very exciting time :). We have members that have done both the sleeve and the RNY. I personally did the RNY and was pre-diabetic, but I didn't make the choice because of the closeness of the diabetes. It was more that I know myself and I know I look for ways to cheat the system when it comes to food, so I didn't want to have the option of eating sugars if I did the sleeve instead of the RNY. I didn't want that out available to me. I'm honestly not sure if there is a preference when you are dealing with that, but some of the other members may be able to chime in about it. And if you don't hear anything on here, just talk to your dr about it tomorrow. Probe her and find out why she only does the sleeve surgery and see what you can find out from her experience with all her patients. And worse case scenario, you can always get a second opinion from another dr who performs both :) Good luck and let us know what you decide and where your journey takes you!

Hi Spooky, glad you found us. :)

Have you ever watched My 600-lb Life on TLC? I catch it occasionally and the last episode I saw, Dr. Now explained that for his higher-risk patients he does the sleeve first and then will revise to RNY once the patient looses a good deal and is healthier (as Diane suggests in her post). So it is definitely an option to discuss with your clinical team today. Definitely them verify that your insurance would cover both steps. But you never know, the sleeve may be all you need. :) Good luck today and keep us posted. :)
