Hi..

Good day.. My current weight is 410..
I'm turning 50 in may..
But my main concern is not being able to really live if I have surgery..
That living in protein shake.. Pills to get vitamin in your body.. And ready about surgeries that went wrong!! 1 out of 200 die from the surgery.. And 4percent have multiple surgeries to fix issues with gallbladder removed.. Or leakage.. .
I had my first visit two days ago.. And liked!! Everything I seen.. But yesterday was like a bomb.. Exploding.. Three calls to schedule appointment.. Heart test.. Breathing test.. Sleep study..
And I haven't even seen a doctor yet.. Just a NP.. We talked.. The took measurement..
And set in a waiting room to get blood took for testing a hour..
I would love to know more.. Before I go any further.. And deep down.. I'm scared..
This is life changing event.. That I can lose.. Nothing guarantee.. I could be another of the 1 out of 200 that didn't make the journey..

Welcome! There are some risks involved, but sometimes you have to consider the risks of not having the surgery. I knew that I’d become a diabetic, having knee replacement surgery would be terrible to recover from, and my high blood pressure and cholesterol would continue. I’m only 38, and there’s no way I could keep living my life at the weight I was if I wanted to stay active and be there for my children. I had my gallbladder removed when I had gastric bypass, so if you’ve had a history of issues with it or are just concerned about it, bring it up. My insurance covered it with the bypass because my surgeon ordered an ultrasound which showed sludge. Totally worth the one extra tests. There are a lot of tests before hand, but that’s only because your bariatric team needs to know as much as possible about your body before hand to help you be successful after. I’m 3 months post op, I have one protein shake a day still, but last night I also had a bite of cheesecake. And that’s all I wanted. Mentally preparing yourself for the changes that must be made after surgery are the most important because that is how you will be successful. If you have any specific questions please ask. Everyone’s journey is different, some of us have had complications, while others haven’t. Some of them were related to the bariatric surgery, and some were but made recovery harder. We’re here for all your questions.

Hello and welcome. I am very happy that Diane posted stats related to death and bariatric surgery, as I feel you have received bad information in that area. I would like to address your other concerns. The comment about living on protein shakes and having to take pills to get vitamins in your body. I also had that fear and honestly, thought "well, how healthy can it be if you have to take supplements for the rest of your life?!" But let's be honest, my concern wasn't health. My fear was giving up food. I love food and when they start talking about the post-op diet it can start to seem like maybe that's the end of food for you. Let me assure it, it isn't. I haven't had a protein shake since 4 weeks after surgery, which was 6 months ago. I eat my protein. I certainly eat much less than I used to and I actually eat healthier than I ever have. But, I have not had to give up any food, so far. Thursday was my husbands birthday and I had a small slice of cake. I do not do that regularly because I worked hard to get here and I plan on staying. . This surgery does the exact opposite of what you fear; it gives you a chance to really live, as you put it. I am also 50. I feel better than I have in DECADES! I can climb the stairs and still breathe, I don't have diabetes anymore, my BP and cholesterol are back to normal. Not only am I living my best life but I GET TO LIVE IT FOR SO MUCH LONGER!!! Don't just look for the possible complications, take a hard look at the very real benefits. Stay in touch. We have all been through every emotion you are going through and will help in any way we can.

Hey boss I mean your demographic group on 56 years old I weighed £462 when I started my journey I had my surgery done in Mexico because I had to pay for myself and the surgeons up here in Seattle wanted 7 $0 to do my surgery and I paid 7000 down there but the only difference between down there and appears I don't have the doctor support but it's a life changing experience and I don't know if you have children or grandchildren but I do and I saw the road that I was driving on and it did not look Very optimistic to me But I think if you have somebody to live for besides yourself and you don't want to miss out on life itself than stay the road stay the course I don't know how this site works but my name is chucky B and you are welcome to contact me anytime with any concerns requested you have leading up to and I will answer them if I can but there's a lot of people on here that have a lot more information than I do but I just want to say it's definitely well worth the risk Good luck and I really do hope to hear from you

I had the surgery right before I turned 51. I'm six and a half months post op and 95 lbs down. As others have mentioned, it's much safer and the risks much lower than what you posted. There are risks, for sure, but I'd put money on the risks of early death from being obese is much higher. I was on a bunch of meds for diabetes, blood pressure and other issues...I'm not on any prescription meds anymore. I had knee problems...not anymore, and the list goes on. Is life perfect? Nope, and it never will be. Is life incredibly better? Yes, absolutely.

The path isn't a cakewalk. There are hoops to jump through. You have to dedicate your life to change, but the surgery can make things so much better and easier in many ways. It doesn't mean it won't be hard, but it is something that is more likely to be successful than the alternatives.
