How do you stop losing? Do you ever worry about not eating enough?

At my 3 month postop right after Christmas, I was 150. The exercise physiologist said I am good at this weight, but could lose maybe 5-10 more if I wanted which I would like to do. I’m down to 146 & am happy. My family is asking me how the weight loss stops. I have asked about this at my appts & understood from my medical group that your body kinda just adjusts to your new eating & levels off. Has that been anyone else’s experience? I know I can add protein shakes, bars, snacks as needed to maintain. My family has been very supportive, but they are concerned that I’ll just continue to drop pounds past what’s recommended.

Hi -

I'm under-weight at the moment. Trust me - it's just as hard to gain weight as it was to lose weight before my bypass surgery. I started at 220 - my lowest weight has been 100. I was wearing size 6 pants - then went to size 4 - then size 2 - then size 0. My goal weight was 135-140. I was very happy in that range. Then several life changing things happened, and more weight just melted off. My dad passed away, my husband had several heart attacks, then he had triple bypass surgery. I truly went for days without eating. I just didn't think about eating. I drank some shakes for the protein and other liquids - but food wasn't even a thought.

The decisions I had to make in regard to my dad and his wishes - were traumatic to say the least. I was just getting leveled out when my husband had his heart attacks. I went back into trauma mode and didn't think about eating. I did drink shakes and other liquids - but food just wasn't my concern. My husband had more stints put in - came home and once again I got leveled out. By the time he was scheduled for his triple bypass - 3 months had passed and I was at 105. I'm now at 111. I see my surgical team weekly. They do lab work weekly. I'm doing a lot better. I'm gaining weight - it's just a very slow process.

In theory - my surgeon and nutritionist both told me that the majority of the weight we lose will be done within 18 months of surgery. Obviously, everyone is different, but they both said that in their experience 18 months was when the weight loss would stop/slow down.
