How much food?

I just made some really liquified cream of wheat for my full liquid diet post op. I probably ate 1/2 a cup then stopped. Shouldn’t I feel full? I don’t and I’m worried about eating to much.

Hello Dsquared- I can only respond as a sleeve patient. It depended on how long it was since my surgery and how quickly I healed. Initially I could barely get an ounce or two down before I felt full. As time passed and my surgery healed and swelling subsided, I could tolerate a little more.

Hi Dsquared,

I had Roux-en-Y bypass done on March 11th. I also have yet to experience feeling full which has completely surprised me. I thought my stomach would be more of an indicator. My nutritionist assures me that my body will object if I eat too much.

The major change I've experienced since surgery is that I'm never hungry. I have an appetite enough to eat when it's time but I haven't felt physical hunger since the surgery. A very different world.

Best of luck to everyone!

Hi, Am I ever glad to hear you haven't felt full yet. It has really been playing with my mind. I thought I should have by now. Thanks for sharing

Hi. I just had a mini bypass on Monday (5/13). Today was my first day having full liquids instead of clear. I have been able to tolerate everything (broth and jello) so far and had no trouble with tomato soup except I was able to eat about 3/4 cup without feeling full. I stopped at that point but feel like I could have kept eating if l wanted to. Maybe the restriction sensation doesn’t really start until you start with foods that don’t just pass straight through your pouch like liquids?

I'm curious about what a mini-bypass is too, please share Ashley. :)

Can you give me idea of how much you are eating? Im afraid to over do it as well

Hi Lovalee,

Typically I have 1 Premier Protein shake as a late breakfast/early lunch and that holds me over until dinner. My diet is still fairly restrictive since I'm only in week 9 so I only have a few go-to meals for dinner:
  • 2 scrambled eggs with salsa and shredded cheddar in them (I hate eggs so I need to mask the flavor and this works well). I make 2 so my small plate looks fuller but make sure not to eat it all, only about 3/4.
  • A baked boneless, skinless chicken breast along with a couple tablespoons of green giant broccoli and cheese sauce. I marinate the chicken in my favorite italian salad dressing so it's moist and has some flavor.
  • Healthy Choice Simply Steamer-Grilled Chicken & Broccoli Alfredo. I eat almost the whole dish. I know that frozen meals aren't the best choice but when I work late, I want something fast.
Later in the evening, I'll typically have a teaspoon of peanut butter to satisfy any sweet cravings. A couple times a week I'll have a Yasso frozen yogurt bar instead of the peanut butter as a treat. The black raspberry with chocolate chips is really good.

Thanks so much for sharing. I find this all so difficult. I wish I felt more satisfied. I have not been eating much, I just got off of full fluids. My surgery was only May 1 and my weight loss has been very slow as well. I am so frusrated. I almost feel like I made a mistake

You're still so early in the process, hang in there, I promise it will get better. I totally get feeling frustrated. I've been there at times too. Just keep reminding yourself why you're doing this and how great you'll feel 6 months from now. :)

Thanks for the advice Diane. I am not feeling hungry at. Just not getting a "full" feeling. I am weighing my food. I did only just start soft food though. I was doing my full fluids 1/2 a cup at a time like I'm suppose to. I guess I am worring because my weight loss has been slow. But there has been no cheating. Also, I hear about all the people that say they are full, feel sick, get sick etc. I have had none of that. I am not getting weighed and measured every week. The program we have here is post op at 10 days, 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year.

for the people who are not feeling full & are worried about it: Does that also mean you still feel hungry?

There are two parts of the stomach organ that can be removed to change appetite. Most RYGB's take out the portion that makes you feel hungry.

The other part is what deals with stomach acid in order to break down food. That's usually removed because bariatric surgery is BASED ON malabsorption. Food is supposed to pass into the intestinal tract quickly so it isn't broken down & its calories used.

This is a question that should easily be answered by your doctor. If not, start looking at prominent bariatric clinics to see if they have information that works for you.

Lovalee, I really don't understand why the doctor didn't keep you on liquids longer. Are you being weighed & measured every week? if not, you should be.

Try to get your head around how you got so overweight in the first place. Imagine the power of your brain that was able to convert feelings to calories until you were obese, morbidly obese, super-obese. Ponder that for a few minutes. You don't have a slow thyroid, it's not just water weight, etc. It's your stinkin' brain that's in charge. That's why you should be in a local support group. Your brain is driving your bus. Bariatric surgery is a paltry tool compared to what's going on up there.

There are books, audiotapes, CDs, online podcasts, cyber-support groups. They are there for you.

Get a journal & write down everything you eat. Weigh it before you eat it. Look up its caloric value & add it to the food consumed. I know a lot of people lose weight slowly, but then often it just kicks in wirh a vengeance & you start to lose in double-digits.

But you must consider that your perception of how the body digests food is fighting the brain trying to sabotage your efforts

Of course, there is always the possibility of an organic problem, like the surgeon didn't do it right, etc.

Consider everything & go here:

Wishing you luck & success!
Sorry Diane, the link for mayo clinic doesnt work

This is my personal opinion here but I am a little over 5 years post sleeve, My Sleeve Story is posted here as well as on Bariatric Food Source if you would like to read it. If you are not feeling full it may be due to full liquid. If it were me, I would continue as you have and stop with the amount "you should be having". Eventually you will feel comfortable and full as this amount becomes normal. If you keep eating because you aren't full and not because your hungry you will stretch your stomach again and gain it all back eventually. Also, if you are only having broth and cream of wheat, the protein is really the "filler" in what you should be having right now. Try a protein shake or protein juice Isolate and see if that helps the "full" feeling. I was overweight for 31 years and always searched for the "FULL" feeling instead of the "I am content, no longer hungry" feeling. These are totally different. Try to start identifying when you are hungry or just not full. Hope this helps! Give it time and yourself time to adjust, it is a huge one!

Thanks for all the comments. I’m eating between 3 and 6 oz of food. I’m not hungry but I am not feeling satisfied. That’s probably a physc problem.

My weight loss has been none existent since the week after my surgery and I’m 4 weeks out. I’m tracking my food regularly and I’m eating less than 600 calories a day but no weight loss. Very frustrated and depressed.

Hello Dsquared- you have to do 3 things to lose weight post-op: get your full allotment of protein, drink plenty of water and get some nutrition from real food. Watching calories is not what my doctor ordered. 600 calories can lead to malnutrition and slow your metabolism. Calories is a factor when looking at your height, weight and activity level. You might not feel like eating, but depending on the diet your nutritionist gave you, you should be. Check in with your doctor if your eating problems continue.
