Hunger pains

Hi Everyone! I just found this site and wanted to introduce myself and get some advice. My surgery was 1/26/22. I had a small reaction after surgery and had to stay in the hospital a few extra days. I know COVID is making this less than ideal, but I feel like the program I've been in, is not very attentive. I have reached out to my nurse and surgeon but I don't really get anything beyond "this is normal" back.

I am hungry, ALL THE TIME. I would say it goes from 2 - 10 on a scale of 2 = small rumbly in the tumbly to 10 = If you don't eat now I'm going to get reallll punchy soon. I don't ever feel satisfied. Just that good ol' "everything is right in the world" feeling. (side note, I've now named my pouch Princess TinyTum...she's really sassy!)

I'm curious if anyone else has gone through this? Any thoughts? I am getting all my protein (80g a day), I'm staying under 100g of Carbs and under 40g of sugar a day. I could be getting more water in for sure, but right now I'm managing around 45-50floz of water.

Thanks for your feedback.

I also had complications and had to stay in the hospital. My issue was nausea. But yes, on week 2 I started being incredibly hungry - like you describe. It was the most miserable part of my journey. I had a very hard time and was also told that it was normal. All I can say - it went away. As you can incorporate more foods into your diet, it will get easier. Hang in there. It will get better very soon!

You are on top of your protein amount daily. Good for you. You probably should try to get your water level up to 64-80+ ozs to deal with some of the hunger pains. The body often will trick you into thinking you are hungry when you are mildly dehydrated. Drinking usually helps.

Eating slowly, taking 1/2 hour for your meal is helpful. Not drinking for 1/2 hour before and after eating is essential to helping your stomach feel full from your meal. Even if you think it won't help, try not drinking during mealtimes, other than a tiny sip or two if absolutely necessary at the end of your meal.

This is not intended to be medical advice, but your daily carb amount seems pretty high, as does the amt of sugar you might be consuming this early in your recovery. Those two items might be triggering food cravings and stimulating your appetite. I would check to see if it would be advisable to decrease those amounts for at least the first few months of your post-surgery diet. Simple carbs & sugar provide quick fuel for your body but are stored as fat, something you may wish to avoid for now.

Good luck as you continue your journey.

Thank you so much!! I don't think I did a good job explaining my macros. I'm hitting 80g of protein a day, and staying UNDER 100 and UNDER 40g (this is the guide my program gave me to follow). I'd say I'm around 60g for Carbs and 25-30 for sugars. I'm definitely focusing on water today. I don't drink anything while I eat, that is very painful right now (although I miss it terribly). I'll focus on more water intake after eating and see if that helps. Thanks so much for your thoughtful advice, I appreciate it!

Mine was nausea too. I was vomiting everything up for 24hours straight. AWFUL pain. I'm so sorry you had to go through that as well, but selfishly I'm glad I'm not the only one! And thank you for the post! I'm SO glad there is an end in sight. All the best!

You’re def not! And I know exactly what you mean, because when I started posting my questions in this forum I was getting a huge relief knowing other people went through the same thing, as much as I didn’t wish on anybody to feel this way. This is when I learned that the internet is painting a little unrealistic picture of what this recovery looks like (maybe they don’t want to stress people out”. But once I started talking to “real people” and their experiences- turns out that most of us is going through a hard time at the beginning. I think when the reality didn’t meet the expectations I had I started worrying that something is wrong.
It is a hard recovery. I still have nausea sometimes. Sometimes I’m thrilled to have my little meal and sometimes it turns me off and I have to rely on a shake. These words kept me going - it will get better, this is only temporary. You’re going through a hard time, but the worst is behind you.
