I’m in hospital again!

I’ve been to the ER 3 times and in 2 different hospitals since Monday. It turns out I had a bowel obstruction, I was in agony, with severe stomach pains and vomiting. The first hospital said I didn’t have a bowel obstruction and wanted to just give me painkillers and observe me! I knew there was something really wrong, so I discharged myself and went to the original hospital where I had the surgery. I had to sit there in agony for 6 hours in the ER. But within an hour of being here, I had been scanned and they had diagnosed an obstruction and started treatment. They inserted a tube up my nose and down my throat into my stomach to suck up the gunk, which was not a pleasant experience, and gave me some anti nausea meds and some morphine.
I had surgery last night, thankfully with my original surgeon, who I trust completely. Today I got up and showered and was able to walk around the ward. They said I can go home within the next couple of days. The obstruction was caused by scar tissue getting stuck to my bowel and twisting it around. The symptoms were severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting and blurred vision!
I just wanted to warn everyone about this, and tell you all to trust your instincts, and know when to stand your ground!

I'm so sorry to hear it Julie! I'm so glad that you refused to accept the plan at the first hospital. Very proud of you girl!!! :) I hope you're still feeling better and get to go home soon!

So glad that was caught it time. That is such a serious thing and I don't know if a lot of people understand how life threatening that can be.
So, so grateful that yours was caught in time.
Happy and speedy recovery.
Thanks Honeysgirl, the most frustrating thing for me was not being taken seriously when I knew there was something wrong, and the first doctor telling me in an almost jocular fashion that I did not have an obstruction! The fool.
The good news is I am now at home enjoying a nice cup of tea :)

So glad you are doing better Pink Julie.
Seen that you had two hiatal hernia repairs that went bad. Did your doctors want you to get the bypass surgery to stop
that from happening? That is what they are telling me. went to the doctor because of the hiatal hernia and came out with them wanting to do the sleeve on me. 'What a shocker" Went to another doctor that would do surgery on me because of a high bmi he said he wouldn't do the surgery to fix the hital hernia unless I lost 45 pounds or I had the roux en y surgery. I feel like it is a scam to get my money. Help!!

Hi there, yes I was told that the RNY was the only way to fix my issues. I had 2 hiatal hernia surgeries go seriously wrong, leaving me in an absolute mess, my stomach was in my chest, attached to my heart and lungs!

My surgeon said that RNY actually started out for this purpose before being used for weight loss (I don’t know if that is true, but the man’s a genius).

Of course I have lost weight as well, but my BMI wasn’t that high to start with and I didn’t have diabetes or any other illnesses.

I have heard that the sleeve isn’t so good for people with GERD.

Anyway, good luck in your journey, whichever way you choose to go. I can say I don’t have any more GERD, my gastro paresis has gone and it’s nice to be skinny, even though I’m still having a few other problems.

Pink Julie, it’s definitely good news your back home. I’ve read through some of your posts and it amazes me how much you’ve been through with this obstruction. I almost feel like they should schedule sonograms or some scan to check for those every month.
I’m sure you’re happy it’s been identified and your case proven. Now what happens? Is there something you have to do to protect yourself from it happening again?

Thanks Ann Elizabeth, nothing I did caused it, it was caused by scar tissue, so there’s nothing I can do. But I do know what to watch out for next time, and I will certainly go straight back to my surgeon next time, as he suggested. Fingers crossed it won’t happen again for a long, long time!

Fingers crossed, it’ll never happen again! You’ve been to the hospital enough! Let’s hope it’s clear sailing for you now!
