Iron deficient

3 years out, feel good, look gook, eat right, exercise and boom I crashed about 6 months ago. Severe iron deficient anemia which is VERY common I now know after gastric bypass. One blood transfusion then 4 weekly iron infusions. My body is not absorbing ANY iron through digestion. I have the anemia under control with infusions every 3 weeks but I am still having problems with iron saturation. Would not be that bad except I have a reaction to nearly all my infusions. Curious if there are others with similar issues and what you are doing and have done to better your health.

Mommyspyss-Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your successful weight loss!!! As far as I know I do not have iron deficiency and I want to avoid getting it. So my question is how did the deficiency go unnoticed so long that it turned into such a serious situation? How often did you go for blood work follow up? The reason I am asking is that my first post surgical blood work is in 6 months. I questioned this and the surgeon said as long as I get my protein and take all of my vitamins and supplements I shouldn't have any major deficiencies. I don't need any more problems than what I went into this with so I want to make sure to cover all my bases.

Thanks for sharing this issue with the forum. Make sure to come back and let us know how you are doing.

Had blood work done with my GP every 6 months, was showing slight anemia at 1 year. Then waiting too long to have blood work. I think i was a few months behind and thought i was going through menopause, I am 50. My 10 minute power naps were quickly turning into 3 hours 'sleeps' 2-3 times a day. My GP just kept trying different types of oral iron. Frustrated I went to a hematologist and found that it didn't matter what I ate (I eat very healthy, but a bit of bad once a week) my body was not absorbing iron. All my other number are good. I also discovered that the 3 year mark after RNY is the most common for iron defiency anemia to present itself.
I am going to yet another Hemotologist Monday for another opinion.
Knowing what I know now and what I am going through, I would still opt for the surgery. My health and quality of life is so much better than it was, I just get frustrated because I try and do everything I can to be healthy.
Probably the biggest difference in my life is working out with a trainer 3 days a week. I figure the money I use to spend on food I pay her, and it shows.
Good luck.
