Just Starting My Journey

Hi everyone! I’m new and just exploring everything about having surgery. I have been thinking about it for many years but my husband was always against it but now has agreed to support it. I’m pretty nervous about the whole process and whether or not I can stop eating all the foods I “can’t live without”. But I have been creeping a while and see that most people say that your tastes change after surgery so I feel slightly better about that. What really worries me is throwing up. I avoid doing that at all costs and I’m afraid that I will do nothing but throw up after surgery. Any advice? TIA!

Welcome! I had bypass about 7 months ago and haven’t thrown up. That being said, I’m pretty diligent about following the eating plan, but even the most strict people can have issues sometimes. The good part is that it’s usually easily resolved. It’s great that your husband is on board-support is really important. You’ll be able to have your “can’t live without” foods again, just on a more limited basis. We all have to live our lives and enjoy foods still, it’s all about reevaluating your relationship with food.

Hi Keri! I did throw up a bit, it was usually water no chunky stuff. The nausea stuck with me for 6 months and now it is gone, thank goodness. My tastes changed after surgery, didn't care about the same food. I did go ahead and eat the foods (smaller amounts) I had craved in the past and usually I was good after one let down, it was not as great as I remembered. I did depend on Zofran dissolving tabs to settle my tummy. Eating simple things helped me too, still does, the more complex I get full too fast. Mashed potatoes was my favorite, but with the nausea gone I have stopped eating them.
Wonderful to have your husband come around, good luck in your journey, you have a great resource in this group.
You can do it!!!

Hi Keri, welcome! There is a lot of info her if you peruse the old posts. Not everyone has nausea after surgery leading to vomiting and if you do experience nausea, they can prescribe something. The only time I had trouble with it is if I ate too much or too fast.

Hi, Keri. Welcome to the group. My husband was VERY resistant in the beginning and finally came around as well It does help to have your spouse in a more supportive role. I am almost at a year post op. I have not had a lot of nausea. I have thrown up but very rarely. And it has usually been related to eating too fast, either because I waited too long to eat or I wasn't really paying attention. It's awful! So I learned to slow down and pay attention. So, I think for the most part, that's really up to you. If you eat the correct amounts and take your time, you should be fine.

It's really hard to wrap your mind around how things will be different after surgery when it comes to food. Some things will be drastically different, and some things will be the same or similar. Everyone's reaction is a bit different, but the surgery gives us a great opportunity to really build a new relationship with food, especially during the first year post op. It still takes commitment to making good, healthy choices, but the surgery helps get started on that path much easier than dieting. It's not all easy, to be sure, there are different difficulties to deal with, but overall it provides a great opportunity to fundamentally change your health and your quality of life.

KeriC,
Welcome to the community! I am new here too and I've found so much support and encouragement here. I hope it can be the same for you!
I waited quite a while before I actually decided to get surgery too. I think I researched and considered and researched some more for well over a year before I scheduled my first consult. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on May 20th and I am so thankful that I did!
I haven't had an issue with being sick at all. In fact, I find that as long as I take my time eating and drinking, I feel great. (I did overeat once by the tiniest amount and it was not fun at all! I didn't feel sick, but I was definitely very uncomfortable.) But, if you do have a tummy that gets upset, there are prescription meds that can help you with that - I believe sharontx mentioned that in an earlier post. I have some at home just in case...but I really haven't found the need for them.
Best of luck on your journey! I look forward to reading your updates :)
