Learning the Hard Way!

I’ll tell you what, learning what and how to eat through this process has definitely not been painless lol. I’m 3 1/2 weeks out and there’s only been 2 times I’ve been honest to God sick; like I can’t function for 6 hours until the food passes through sick. I’ve eaten both foods that made me sick multiple times with no issues, so I must be eating too fast, not chewing enough or both. Then I realized the two times I got sick were the only times I ate when I had company. I was pacing my eating like I did pre op without realizing what I was doing. Never making that mistake again!!! Important takeaway; ALWAYS be cognizant of how you’re eating!

YES!! It can be difficult to eat - I re-learned how to eat. I forget and sometimes take a sip of whatever I'm drinking while eating. NOT a good thing to do. Now, I don't have anything to drink on the table when I eat. We're constantly learning what we can do and what we can't do while enjoying this wonderful new life journey!

I have been feeling starving still after 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. Im on pureed stage. I don't want to get the feeling you are describing but I don't know if it eating enough cause how hungry I am. I want to feel the full feeling so I know exactly how much to eat. Am I doing this wrong? I don't see my nutritionist for another month! Ay yi yi

Cane -

I would strongly recommend following whatever your dr., nutritionist have said on the amounts and types of food to eat at each stage. Are you getting enough protein in? Are you allowed creamy soups? Are you allowed eggs? How long will you be in the pureed stage? Check out some of the Recipe threads - there are some interesting recipes. Get creative and try new things - if you like them - bake/boil/microwave a sweet potato - puree it with whatever you like on yams. I love cauliflower - you can roast it with herbs and other seasonings add some chicken broth and have pureed roasted cauliflower soup - you can do the same with broccoli. Try Cream of wheat - if you like it. Try other foods that can easily be pureed - make sure you're getting enough protein in for the day. I struggled in the beginning with getting enough protein in my diet. The best thing is that the pureed stage doesn't last long. Best of luck with your new life altering journey!

Are you not allowed to e-mail to call your nutritionist prior to your follow up appointment? I'm glad I can message my dietician as needed because there is so much to learn about eating.

I tried refried beans tonight, and I enjoyed them. I had about 1/4 cup, and not too long after that last bite, I could tell it was a bite too much. Not painful, per see, but a little uncomfortable. I'm not sure how I'd feel with cottage cheese, I don't think it would have felt the same. I was eating yogurt during the liquid phase and that never really made me feel full, but I could definitely feel the refried beans. I waited 30 min to drink anything, and the water felt a little weird going into my stomach like there wasn't much room. It was a strange feeling.

You can't possibly be getting your protein in because on another thread you said you were eating 3/4 of a cup of cottage cheese and that is the equivalent of 21 grams of protein, and you are having a protein shake which is generally 20g although I guess some of them might be 30 grams. Anyway you're not getting enough food to match the grams. You need to eat more.

Women need 50 to 70 grams of protein a day oh, and you may not be even hitting 50. 50 is the minimum and you obviously are not taking enough calories.

Forgive me for asking, but don't you have a nutritionist? You should have a nutritionist and you should have a hand-out that outlines what you should be eating and when, including protein grams. If you don't have them, one of our kind members did post her post-op regimen. There's nothing wrong with following hers but really you should be talking to a nutritionist all the time. You may not make it to August 28th!
I agree!! I am going to see if I can get a hold of her today if its the last thing I do! You guys are amazing and so happy u are all helping. I feel so confused and overwhelmed sometimes.

I've been getting in about 55 grams of protein and now in adding another shake that will get me to 85 grams. I was never a cooker so its been hard for me to cook when it's just easier to have quick meals. I know I have to change that I just don't know how:(
