Post surgery 8 weeks now, and I still can't really eat anything. I try something new almost every day, but as soon as I take a bite, I get the vomit feeling. I end up spitting it out, and feeling like I'll never be able to eat solid food again. I am getting protein from a smoothie with collagen (whey protein gives me the same feeling), and Ritz's crackers with peanut butter (OK'd by my doctor!). Just wondering if I'm alone or are others going through the same?

I have the same problem. My doctor keeps telling me to push through. It is the worst in the morning. My breakfast is usually in the toilet by mid-morning, and I even take nausea pills. I have been doing the protein shakes, but they don't work I just don't know what to do, like you.

Well at least I know I'm not alone! Hang in there Mary. Just over the last couple of days, I've found if I take small (really small!) bites and don't try to chew it a hundred times, I can at least get two or three bites in. I have to keep telling myself to take some time between bites. Hopefully this will help me get to where I don't have the dry heaves when eating. I'll keep you posted. Good luck! :)

Yikes! Are you any better now?

I was like that after my gastric sleeve surgery. I was okay when I was in the puréed stage but when I would try to eat solids I would actually throw up. After a lot of trials and tribulations, I was finally able to start to eating solids again. I think that before surgery, we would eat and not think about it but after surgery, we try to be like we were before surgery and our brains are saying no, no, no and we automatically have a gag reflex. It’s psychological and we have to train our brain into thinking it’s okay to eat but smaller portions. Every once in a while I will get a wave of nausea but not so much as before. I think that our bodies are saying “That is enough food.” I hope that this helps you with your nausea.

I am hardlrdly eating at all because almost everything makes me vomit. I use to love water and I can't hardly stand it. I did great the first two weeks and then this vomiting started in. I'm not getting my proteins right now. I can't always keep my meds down and I'm taking them one at a time spread a few hours apart. I'm frustrated. I've barely lost any weight...which I don't even care about that...I did this surgery to help relieve the stress my sad little liver is constantly under. At this point I'm feeling like this may have been the wrong thing to have done.

There are always going to be curveballs as you adjust to your new digestive routine. But please, tell everything to your doctor, nutritionist or medical team. What is a normal recovery for one person might be signs of alarm for another. Only a medical professional can evaluate you. Please make a call.
