Yes indeed, never forget. I wish with all the division today in our country we will be reminded about how united we were after this horrible attack. It makes me very sad that people can't come together during this pandemic like they did on 9/11.
While I didn't lose a close friend or family member that day, I was very fortunate. It hits very close however, being in a community that has lost so many. I live in an area where many NYFD and NYPD live and commute to NYC. I am pretty much at the edge of the commuter radius. In fact my father took the train every day to commute into Manhattan. And my husband who worked many years for our local telephone company was on assignment a few times to World Trade Center prior to 9/11 when they were putting in fiber optics and he was in an engineering position at the time requiring him to travel to World Trade during that installation. Thankfully that was only a temporary stint but he knew the area quite well.
My husband was also a National Air Guard Reservist. He did his 2 week active duty at ground zero, his assignment was security but he had first hand contact with the grieving people who would come to the site following the attacks. A lot of emotion.
My sister who was a senior vice president in an International Corporation and headed many offices in the Northeast including the one at the south tower of the World Trade Center happened to be at the New Jersey location that day, thank God. However she was responsible for the office in the south tower and had to account for them it see if they were alive, injured or worse. I can't even imagine her stress level. She told me that the entire office went to leave the south tower and someone told them it was okay to go back in, but they decided not too. So eventually all were accounted for being safe except for two guest speakers who were setting up a conference in one of their spaces higher up in the tower. Sadly, those two didn't make it.
One of my best friends use to work at World Trade Center but was out on maternity leave that day. You could say her unborn son saved her life. Her entire office had perished.
My daughters friends from school lost his mom who also worked in the tower. Just a reminder how this could have ended differently for my family had my sister been in her Manhattan office that day.
Many members of our local communities suffered loss, the funerals seemed to go on and on. The World Trade Center Movie featured a family in a town just 10 minutes from me. I had no idea until I saw it at the movies.
I certainly will never forget that day. I get the same feeling in my chest every year, not stress really but an emptiness for all the loss. I know that is only minor compared to what others have had to face. My heart goes out to each and every one of them and to those who bravely went in to give it their all to save others, or in the days to follow to dig to find remains. I just haven't the words to express my sorrow, but I pray for you all.
