New and Nervous

Just joined the site today 8/1/20. I am scheduled for surgery Monday, August 31 of this year. I am looking at this with a great deal of excitement, anticipation, and dread. I would imagine these are all normal emotions. I am 76 years old and if I don't lose the weight I'm not gonna make it much further. I'm currently at 410 pounds and looking to get to 260.

I managed to decaffeinated myself over the last four months so that hurdle is over. Now I'm ordering the protein shakes from Amazon. I do have a question instead of baby food can I purée my own food?

Welcome. There is a wealth of information on this site. While none of us can give medical advise, we can answer other questions. What kind of procedure are you having? You have already jumped over a big hurdle by eliminating caffeinated beverages from your diet. I am 70 years old (I thought the oldest, here, so a double welcome for making this difficult decision) I am having the gastric sleeve done on August 17. I always had a beverage with my meals and have given this up. I always had a fear of choking while eating, so drank an iced tea or coffee with my meals. I was originally scheduled for surgery on March 18, but was cancelled on March 16, 6 days into the pre-surgery diet and 2 days before the procedure. On Monday, I go to the hospital for my pre-admission tests (again) and Friday have an appt with one of the surgeons in the group. So, I am excited about this really happening. Next week, I have my Covid virus test at the hospital. (it has to be done within a week of surgery) Again, welcome!

Welcome! Congratulations on taking this amazing journey towards self health. I think anyone who can do this, no matter what age or weight, is absolutely amazing. Going decaf can be such a struggle. I went decaf, then got delayed, and am back to 1 coffee a day. But, I still don’t have my surgery date, so I can get back to decaf fairy easy. I’m hoping that I can just quit coffee and tea all together. I can’t drink either without sugar, and that certainly won’t help my end result!

OK Name is Mike. I am a man 76 years old and stand 6'4". Good information about target thank you. I am a very bad speller so my post tend to be short. In two weeks I start the liquid diet and I am sure I will get tired of chocolate real fast, but that's what it takes.

Well only two weeks to go before I start the liquid diet. So I have been looking at our shopping list and paring it down, getting rid of those things that I will not be able to eat. As the weekly shopping costs go down the cost for protein shakes goes up. Now that I finally have a date I'm getting more excited. This week I talked to my cardiologist and pulmonologist to get clearance for the surgery. Things are starting to move along quite quickly now.

I forgot to answer your question. Yes I have kept the information of my upcoming surgery to just a very few. I live in a retirement community and most of our social activities have been curtailed during the pandemic, so when we finally come out of this social isolation I will probably surprise a few people.our community has its own medical staff and one of the RNs on staff has gone through this surgery already so she is a great source for questions and suggestions which by the way is how I got here.

Hi, Mike. Welcome to the group. Yes, you can puree your own food. My program actually did not allow us the option of baby food due to the high sugar content in most baby foods. Who knew?!? It's great that you have medical staff available to you and someone close that has already been through it. She will be a lot of help as well. And we are always here. Good luck!
