My surgery is coming up in a week. I am nervous but excited. I am having the bypass. I just started my liquid diet today, it is very hard, I am hoping it will get easier as the week goes on. Can someone please tell me what my diet will be the first week after my surgery. I have been told different things, a clear liquid diet and a pureed diet. Thanks---LONI

I was on clear liquids for my first week and full liquids the second week. Some surgeon's start their patients on liquid protein right away so it can vary. You won't want to eat (drink) during your first week home anyway. It is critical that you get enough fluids even if you don't want to. Just keep a beverage with you at all times and sip, sip, sip. Day by day it will slowly get easier for you :) You don't have to drink plain water unless that is your preference. You can have a sugar free, caffeine free, non-carbonated beverage of your choice after surgery. Sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles and protein shakes count towards your fluid goal if you are allowed to have these things early on.

Hi Lonilove, welcome. The doctor or nutritionist should send you home with a spacific meal plan with what you can have if they don't then ask for some guidlines and timelines for trying differnt foods and the amount of fluids, calories and protien intake a day. I remeber that last week before surgery, it was the hardest for me by the night before surgery I just wanted it done so I could eat something, then when it was over I wasn't hungry:rolleyes: We all get nervouse and excited and about a dozen other emotions, it is natural, Hang in there time will go by fast now. Tom
