Hi everyone! This is my first post, and first time on a online support group. So I guess I should write a little bit about myself and why I want to get weight loss surgery.

Currently I am a grad student getting my masters in clinical counseling here in NYC. Throughout most of my life I have struggled with my weight. Ever since I started puberty my weight has been a problem. It has gotten to a point that medically I need to loose the weight. I have PCOS and endometriosis which causes me to have very heavy periods due to my body not being to always ovulate. If I loose the weight then my body should be able do better. But that is where in problem is, I have never been able to loose much weight no matter how hard I tried. They only time I was only remotely successful to loose weight was after major surgery.

I am getting my surgery done at St Luke's in NYC. Most of my pre-surgical testing is done with the only issue being that my iron stores are very low and I am slightly anemic. I have been taking iron for a month and I hope that it worked! Tuesday I am getting my psych exam and I am meeting the surgeon on the 12th where I hope to get my surgery date. I am hoping he will allow me to get RYN.

Don't know if I should wait till thanksgiving to get the surgery done or try to fit it in during the semester. I have to wait till I talk with my surgeon and my dean to know for sure.

Well before I write a book I am wrapping up this post. I look forward to getting to know people here, and learning your story!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your circumstances, and I wish you all the luck in the world. I'm afraid your recovery will be longer than a Thanksgiving break. This is major surgery and it will take several weeks at least-- for some it takes as much as 6 weeks. I've been a graduate student and I wouldn't try to fit this in between classes! Just sayin'.
Another thing to consider is the requirements from your insurance company. That can drag on and on. I had to have 6 months of nutrition classes, attend support groups, and have some other medical tests before the surgeons office would even submit the paper work. Then that took another month.
