I am glad I found this site! I am set to meet my surgeon in mid March. I was wanting the lapband, but the nutritionist is recommending the bypass. I am 5'6 and 210 (was 239) with pre- diabetes, high choloesterol, sleep apnea. I am afraid of loosing too much weight with the bariatric surgery vs. lapband. ( I think I am afraid of being skinny again lol) I had always been active as a kid and into my mid 20's. Was in very good physical shape. Then got married and during pregnancies (2) my wt. got out of control. In the last 10 yrs I put on over 60 lbs (do to sedentary lifestyle) I have live off protein drinks for the last year ( I actually like them) I have been working out with a personal trainer for the last month incorporated spin class, yoga and step into my program as well. Sadly, I am still not loosing wt. Very frustrating for me. Hence, the reason they bariatric team wants me to have the lap band. They feel it will be more beneficial to me vs. the lap band ( Metabolic reason) I want to stay physically active post surgery and I know that will take time. Then again I see and here from people who like their food and struggle with that.

HI Cjiti44 welcome to this site, I'm still new but I love reading others stories as we all share this new journey we're taking on> sounds like you're pretty active now. how long did it take for you to get into your surgeon? Have they given you a surgery date yet? I have one more appt. to do then they said wait 5 days then I can call the surgeon's office for an appointment. I am so anxious I wish I could have it done in April. Anxious to begin this journey and see results for giving up certian foods and I know it's permanent and the weight won't come back as long as I follow all the rules and exercise.

Hi Cgit44, Welcome. I have always been real active and still gained weight, when I hit 315 and at age 44 and just getting older and heavier every year I knew I had to do something. I too thought about the lap band and compared the RnY to that and after talking with the pre bariatric consultation folks and doctors I opted for the RnY due to my matabolism and age, I also spend a lot of time in the wilderness and if I had a lap band complication it would happen at the worst possable time when I was miles frome any road or medical facility. I have no regrets I did have some struggles along the way but it wasn't food that bit me it was my thirst for wine:rolleyes:, but I have taken care of that. If you do have the RnY or Sleeve you may have to cut out some starches like potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, etc.. and sweets. I have no tolerance for pasta , white bread and really surgar ladend foods but I can tolerate small amounts of toasted breads. Rice and potatoes are no problem in moderation either.

Like the rest of us you have more than likely tried everything else and have not made this descision lightly, it takes a lot of soul searching and as long as you realize this is a tool in getting healthy and not a qick fix then you have been educated well. I am not selling the RnY over the Band, it is a personal choice, but the doctors are there to help us in our descision but utamatly the choice is ours. Let us know how you are doing and what you deside on, Good luck. Tom

Hi. Welcome to the forum. When I first went in for my consultation, I was looking at the gastric bypass. I'm 5'1 and 272 lbs, which makes my BMI 52.3. I was told not to get the lap band because it wasn't as effective, and with my BMI so high, the surgeon suggested the duodenal switch, it has a better long term success rate with minimal to no weight gain even after 10 or 15 years. And this surgery is only approved for people with a BMI over 50. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, mild depression, GERD, Fibromyalgia and a 2 mm disc protrusion in my L5/S1. I am exercising moderately 3-5 days a week and have joined a local gym, the owner of the gym even set up a routine for me to help with the needs pre-surgery.
Good luck with your surgery, let us know how things are going.
