One month post op

Tomorrow is my one month surgery anniversary! I had my post op today, and it was mostly good. I’m down 32 pounds, which was shocking to the NP (and me as well to be honest). She said if I wasn’t following the diet, which I am, or throwing up, which I’m not, she’d be worried. One thing that I did talk to her about is that I feel like I have a lump at the base of my throat all the time. It’s like there’s always a burp stuck. I do have trouble swallowing denser foods and usually have to clear my throat and swallow again to get the food to go down. She’s going to talk to the surgeon about it, but she said he’ll probably want to do an endoscopy to check it out and see if it needs stretching. Other than that things are going well. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow!!

Hi everyone, I’m a four weeks out from surgery and I’m concerned about the sudden halt in weight loss. I lost 20lbs in my first two weeks but I haven’t lost anything else and I’m coming up on week five. I eat like I are before surgery. I don’t have that feeling of being full, I can eat almost as much as I did before without any complications, and I haven’t experienced any uncomfortableness or vomiting from eating too much. And I think this might be related to my not losing anymore weight. I’ve talked to my surgeon and dietician a lot and they both say that this is all normal but I don’t feel that it is. With the rise in COVID cases in NY I haven’t been to the gym all that much since leaving the hospital. I don’t know what to do. I’m starting to feel hopeless and discouraged that things are not going like I was led to expect. Does anyone have pointers or experienced the same thing I am? Please help.

I just got a message that they want me to take gas x 3 times a day to see if that helps the lump feeling in my throat. I have to let them know Monday how it’s feeling.
Congrats on 1 month and 32 lbs down! I'm sure that feels great! I hope the gas x helps with the lump. I can't say I experienced that, but please post if that seems to help it resolve.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I answered your post about this in another string, so you might want to check that out. You aren't going through anything unusual, which doesn't mean it isn't frustrating. I'm sure it is, but you can still be on track for great success. Go check out my other response and read the related post I referred to there.

I wish I could have taken a video of the NPs reaction when I said my current weight LOL She was pretty surprised, but I’m also surprised every time I weigh myself. I’m sure it’ll slow down as I add more food, but I’ll take it for now!

So the gas x has helped and my dr wants me to stay on it for a couple weeks then tapper me off. They also said it would help if I moved more, but I move a lot already. I’m going to start a walking workout program in my living room today (watching from YouTube) and some light arm weights. Hopefully that will continue helping!

Sounds like mild acid issues.

It is normal to stall. I am currently on a stall and just stopped weighing myself for now to reduce frustration.

However, if you are still eating like pre surgery you probs need to work a bit on that. If you have to measure out foods then start there.

I am glad to see the report about the gasx. I am having the same problem. Everything I eat, no matter what sits with a lump and then for the next 10-15 minutes I get sporadic sudden pain. Almost as if it is working its way down. The strange thing is other than when I eat, I have no pain and really didnt except for the gas pain after surgery. This Thursday will be 3 weeks post op for me. I am ready to scream, I lost 12 pounds during the pre-op diet and 12 since but now nothing in the last 5 days. I am walking daily and eating all the proteins.

I had pain everytime i ate up until just recently. Part of this is normal as your stomech adjust to change. I also had acid reflux issues that may or may not have added to it. Just convently the pain stopped when I got the acid under control.

I am 3 months out as of today. You might want take a look at what you are eating and see if thats a factor...the food itself or things such as chewing it down enough and moisture content. If it feels like food is tuck you might not be chewing well enough. However, also note that the feeling of a lump in the throat had be one of the signs of acid issues so keep an eye on that.

From what I understand, everyone is different. I am coming up on 6 weeks post op, but lost 50 pounds in 5 weeks. My surgeon was pretty shocked with that as was I. This past week I weighed in and maintained. I was a little shocked because I had been steady losing about 10 pounds a week but the NP informed me everyone’s body is different. Aside from that it can also be the food you are intaking. Since you’ve already mentioned it and they said it is “normal” I would just monitor what you are doing and see if you notice any changes. Create a plan if you will, unless you already have one. Follow your plan and see what works best for you to jumpstart that loss again.

I am having the same! I have never felt full but I haven't pushed past like 10oz . I'm also stalled - and gaining! I'm counting every nutrient and calorie and I know I'm not over 700 calories. I've read it's common and I've read it's probably lack of adequate protein, but like you I keep imagining that it didn't work and I'm right back where I was before surgery. It's a horrible feeling.

10 oz is more then what you should be eating for an entire day at this point. Im almost 4 months post and only eat about 3oz at a meal and that is max.

Its not just about counting calories. Water and protein are important as well. Eating a lot of low calorie food, but eating excessive amounts is going to backfire. Balancing protein/calories and amount is necessary
