One week old!

So glad to have found this chat room! I’m only one week in, and I’m wondering, with such a small stomach, why am I SO hungry?? Sure, the all-liquid diet might have something to do with it, but I was expecting to get full easily from protein shakes. Any advice on how to manage hunger?? Thanks!

I just had my surgery 2 weeks ago and at the one week mark I became super hungry. My daughter searched online and found it can be part of the healing process, since nerves can be cut during surgery in the part of the stomach that makes us feel hungry. Thankfully, a couple of days later it subsided. I just sipped water to get through it. The interesting thing is I had absolutely no pain after the surgery, until this past week...it's not bad pain, just soreness.

I wasn't hungry at all the first 5 days post surgery. However when I woke the following day I was starving. Now at 3 weeks post I definitely am hungry at my meal times, however I only eat about a 1/4 cup food and I'm full.

Right now I am in the pureed stage another 2 weeks. I am pretty much eatting cottage cheese, hardboiled eggs and the pre-made packages of tuna and chicken. These are the only foods that I have food I like enough to eat frequently. I will also do a 10gm protien yogurt smoothie 2 times a day.

There is a ton of variation to what people experience as hunger. Sometimes your body needs more water, and that can be interpreted as hunger. That happens to me quite frequently if I don't have my water bottle with me. I feel hungry and realize I haven't been drinking. During each phase, it most often turned out that I needed to drink more...even if I was on pace to meet 64 oz. I tend to drink closer to 100oz, but I know not everyone can stomach that (pun intended...lol).

There is also "head" or "bored" hunger that can come up. This also happened to me. There have been times when I knew I had eaten enough, and I knew if I ate any more I'd be overful and probably uncomfortable, but the hunger was still present. Your body after surgery is having all sorts of hormones being reset, your microbiome gets a reboot, and you are doing a lot of healing and tissue repair. All of this can send multiple signals to your brain and other parts of your body that can get interpreted as hunger.

Generally, if I feel hungry and know it hasn't been long enough for me to have a snack or another meal, I sip on water for at least 30 minutes. Then I find something distracting to do, then after an hour, if I'm still hungry, it's probably time for a snack or a meal, but even if it isn't I'll then have something to eat because at that point I think my body probably needs it. This has been working for me quite well, but everyone is different, of course.

Hunger will be a part of almost everyone's journey. There are some who wish they would get hungry, but most people have to redevelop their relationship with hunger, satiation and fullness.

I'm 11 days out, I think U R experiencing more cravings then actual hunger. I see my husband eating his snacks or see his dinner plate I get a craving. But there really is no way I could actually eat it.
