Pre-op

Hi all-
I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. I am 45 years old, Type 1 diabetic 30+ years, have severe GERD for 20+ years, and newly diagnosed sleep apnea. I also take medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and hypoactive thyroid. I also recently discovered I have ulcers. I currently weigh about 330 lbs. and since gastric sleeve is not a good option due to the ulcers and GERD, I am a couple months into the 6-month insurance process to have RNY later this year (though probably not until late summer, due to summer plans and work schedules). I've been was very thin when I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 13 but before that and since then, I have always been overweight. My weight has steadily increased over the past 10 or so years, despite only eating about 1500 calories a day, give or take. I've always been fairly active but at my current weight, it's becoming more and more difficult. I made the decision to explore this option because I want to be able to travel and explore. My husband and I love camping and travelling around to country to watch baseball games and compete in barbecue competitions, and extra weight can make all of those things difficult.
My biggest concern (as I mentioned in another post) is that we are also foodies and a lot of our social life revolves around food. While I understand the limitations, it is still important to me to be able to enjoy food, though on a much, much smaller scale. I'm also concerned about being Type 1 diabetic. Most of the people I've spoken to have Type 2, which in a lot of cases is cured by the surgery. That will obviously not happen with me, and I am a bit nervous about how to adjust my insulin needs properly, and also how to treat low blood sugars when intake is so restricted.
I appreciate any insight anyone has as well as any encouragement. Since I still have several months, I am making a valiant effort to see what I can do on my own with exercise. I got derailed a bit when I recently had Covid but I'm currently working back into my daily routine.

Hi MissyR, welcome to our group. On the food issues and enjoying food, I think we can still enjoy food post surgery but make wiser choices. And if you like to cook, check into foods that are lightened up from the original recipes. Cooking Light and Skinny Taste are two that I can think of off the top of my head. They have lots of cookbooks out but you can also get a lot of their recipes online.

Hello and welcome to the group. All of your hobbies sound super fun and I'm sure we'd all love a BBQ recipe if you've got one to spare lol I will say, I find it a lot easier to be active since the surgery. Even just walking takes so much less energy than it used to. I'm sure your doctors will be monitoring you closely to make sure that your insulin/blood sugar levels remain steady throughout the process. Good luck.

We still smoke food like we did when I was pre op. There’s really nothing much wrong with the way we prepare it. I just eat a lot less of it LOL The first time I had our smoked pork after I was cleared for meats etc., I was so excited to eat it!

OMG yes, 3mom... I was so glad to see it will be a high protein way of life! I eat high protein now and I think if I couldn't have our smoked meats, I would have to find another way. :)

I think it will just take some adjustments. Mostly, I don't want to lose the life my husband and I have built, or make him feel like he is missing out because of me. He is completely supportive so it's important to me that we continue to enjoy our same hobbies, even if I have some limitations.

Thank you all for your responses!
