Purée stage problems?

Hello All.

First, I did contact my bariatric team regarding my concerns. I am actually on my way to get labs done that they’ve order and pick up medications. I am just posting to learn if anyone remembers or are currently experiencing similar during the purée stage. I’m 16 days post op. Down 21 lbs so far. Two days ago I started the purée stage. I only prepare 2.3 to 2.5 oz for a meal. It takes me an hour to eat not even half. I opt to make 4 out of the 6 meals liquid to ensure I still get at least 70 grams of protein and my 64 oz of liquid. I was told maybe I just can’t tolerate that food now, but it’s happened with chicken, tuna, crab meat, turkey (all blended and followed my teams recipes) and to a less extent pudding and yoghurt. Again we’re doing labs and zofran 20 mins prior to eating. I just wanted to know has anyone else had difficulties at this transition? I did tell them I’m ok with staying on liquids longer, food will always be there, I want to make sure I hang around a little while longer ☺️. TIA!
 
There's nothing I can't eat, and it's been that way since Day One, so I think intolerances are part of each person's metabolism. There were foods I found unappetizing at first but I followed the nutritionists food list to a T. I was already a big water drinker, so that helped. And at four weeks post-op, I started hiking around Seattle. Our hills easily rival those of San Francisco. So I lost 35 lbs the first month and 25 the next. I continued to lose smaller amounts, then stalled for five months.

My weight loss was less affected by what I ate than how much I moved. Try increasing movement and in a few months, you may find your appetite returning to "normal."
Thank you for the advice. I keep moving to just 2 mi a day because I average about 450-600 calories so I was afraid to do more, but I’ll see what I can do when they call about lab results. I miss hiking though. Every time someone mentions hiking here Kentucky, it’s really walking in the park, not like it was when I lived in the Adirondacks. I really want to start lifting weights, even small amounts (less than 10 right now), but I know that’s too soon. It does make sense moving more could help with that. Thank you again!
 
Yeah, I know it’s on the low side. I was concerned but I was still on liquids so the range was up to 550, but I am too nauseous. But the way they outlined the plan in the binder, Entering into stage 3 for purée the guidelines has anywhere from 650-750 sample menu ideas for the two weeks, then in stage 4 an additional 200 for the two weeks, then finally at stage 5 1,000-1,200. I think I’m there for 6 months and then it’s my nutritionist appointment. All my appointments for the year have been made prior to surgery. These first two weeks, my two appointments turned into 4 additional calls. Anyway, thank you for the advice. I forget about calisthenics. I think once the nausea goes away, I’ll do better. Had hummus today and I did ok.
 
I was on liquids a bit longer than you are, and I think that helped me adjust. That being said, meats seem to be more difficult to digest for everyone. So it might be a better idea to do the puree phase with veggies and hold off on meat until soft foods. I slow cooked all my meat for that phase since meat was too dense for me otherwise.

Thank you. I think I’ll stick with liquids and puréed veggies. I tried hummus and it was not bad, but then I tried turkey and not so good

My go to foods were egg salad, tuna salad and such. I can not fathom the thought of putting meat in a blender and sucking my Easter dinner through a straw. To those that can - more power to you. I'm not a hummus fan - but I do enjoy refried beans - pintos, great northern beans, black beans - good source of fiber.

Bread was/is a difficult thing for me to process. I do ok with the thin bagels and 45 calorie bread - but I don't eat much of either. Find foods that work for you. It's a trial and error kind of process. Best of luck to you!
 
During my pureed stage, I made Salmon Spread/dip with canned salmon, cottage cheese, spoonful of sour cream (nonfat Greek yogurt word work as well), onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, chives, and parsley flakes. I blended this in my mini chopper. I loved the flavor and consistency. One of the few ways I could handle pureed meat.

I wish I could have eggs. They are still on the foods to avoid list until week 4. So I have one more week left until then. I find it odd I can have blended chicken but eggs are a no go (they say it causes bloating). ImBut there are so many variations out there that you’re right. It’s trial and error. Thank you!
