Sugar free

I have a question. I know you’re not supposed to eat sugary foods. What I’m asking is can you eat sugar free foods after surgery or would you still get dumping symptoms?

Hiya Bill. Sugar free foods are fine. Actually, things like sugar free jello, pudding & popsicles are encouraged in the beginning because they also help you stay hydrated. I actually never had dumping symptoms, even from real sugar but many people do. Best to avoid them as much as possible anyway for weight loss. I've graduated to Atkins candy when I crave chocolate. They make their version of peanut butter cups and peanut M&Ms that are pretty good. Expensive though so I try to make a package last at least a week. ;)

It is great that you are preparing ahead of time, just keep in mind, it will be awhile before you probably eat any of that. In the beginning, your portion sizes are so small and you are so focused on getting in your protein that they won't have the nutritional value you need to get you where you want to be. You won't be hungry as often and you will eat so much less that wasting an eating opportunity on something that doesn't help you meet your goals seemed pointless to me. I am now over 10 weeks out and have purchased some sugar free cookies to have occasionally when I want a sweet, but I still don't eat it often because it takes away from the foods that have all the protein I need (and the cookies are 100 calories a piece... just completely empty calories). But they will be great in moderation later on :)

Good luck on Monday!

There are people that get dumping syndrome from sugar free foods. Everyone reacts differently to sugar alcohols that are used in them. I personally don't use sugar free/artificial sweeteners at all any more. I use natural alternatives (date sugar, fruits, etc.) in place of sweeteners/sugar.
