Surgery a month ago and COVID.

Hi all,
I just joined your group because I can see that you all help each other and I think it is wonderful. I am 4 1/2 weeks post op VSG, had some complications that kept me in the hospital for 5 days. The day I came home, my husband brought Covid home from work and infected me. It has been a rough month. The worst part is that I cannot smell or taste. I had to really mentally prepare myself to drastically cut my food intake, but I wasn't prepared for this. For the 3-4 ounces that I can eat, I really need to taste it to start to feel satisified and I don't. I'm finding myself angry, frustrated and depressed! This wasn't part of my plan and I don't know how to make it feel any better. Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks group!

I am really sorry for your struggles. I was terrified of getting covid after my surgery in October because I was worried about coughing and trying to heal from surgery while fighting off a virus. I cannot imagine the struggle you’re going through. Keep up your protein shakes, liquid, and hope that your taste will come back in time. I hope you start feeling better quickly.

Thanks so much! Most of my Covid symptoms have subsided except for the smell, taste and a little cough so I am grateful for that! It was not a great way to heal.

Aw, Stacy, that really sucks. The period right after surgery can be emotionally trying anyway. Adding in covid is rough. I know a person who lost taste/smell with CoVid and it took his taste/smell almost 2 months to come back. BUT, it did come back. The only suggestion I can offer is to just keep meeting your water/protein goals. You have much to be grateful for; your surgical complications seem to be cleared up and you seem to be recovering well from both surgery and CoVid, so stay strong.

I think everyone deals with those first few weeks differently. Some on here literally HATE the taste of protein shakes so those first few weeks were hell. I liked protein shakes but wanted some actual FOOD. Any freaking thing to CHEW, regardless of the amount. I would also think it would be harder without taste actually. Even the person I know who lost taste/smell was getting depressed and he's not even a foodie. So hopefully they come back soon.

Hi Stacy, welcome to our group! So sorry that you and your husband have/had Covid. I'm glad your symptoms weren't any worse than they were. At first when I read your post I was thinking that loss of smell or taste would be minor compared to some of the other symptoms of Covid but I do see your point. I also think that after surgery many of our emotions are all over the place so I think that can be a part of your frustration as well. I echo what Missy said, I also know someone where their taste and smell DID come back so hang in there. I do think once you can eat regular food again and can get all the textures, that will make you feel more satisfied even if your taste hasn't come back by then. Sorry to hear you had complications. I did too and I think that adds to the emotional aspect.

Thanks so much. Yes very emotional time. I'm hoping taste and smell will be back soon. In the meantime just eating mush. LOL
