The fear of never waking up from being put under…

I have my EDG tomorrow then hiatal hernia repair Friday. I don’t know if it’s normal to freak out over being put under but I know there’s always a risk that I won’t ever wake up. This will be my 3rd time being under in a month time frame. That’s a LOT to me and I’m 110% scared over it. I think about my beautiful husband being left to raise our 3 children alone and how stressful that will be on everyone. Our children are still so young and I want to be around for a very long time for them all. Anyhow, I just wanted to let off some of these worries I have. Guess it’s better I share than keep it all in.

When I was in the navy I was put under for a procedure that I was supposed to be under for a couple of hours. 8 hours later I woke up to a frantic staff. So I report to dr now that I am very susceptible to staying under too long. They make adjustments for me to not stay under long. That happened back in 78. Then in 83 when I had my tubal I came out with diarrhea and vomiting at the same time. This too I report to dr. It has helped over time. I am allergic to Demerol, that ended the vomiting and diarrhea. From 97 to 2001 I went through 5 surgeries for staples put in my ureter during a hysterectomy, In 95. Being open with dr and anesthesiologist is very important. Let them know your fears, then they can address them with you. Dr studied a lot and long time but they can still be surprised now and then. Sometimes you really have to get their attention to talk to them but make sure you do get their attention for your concerns. For most procedures now they do have you speak to anesthesiologist directly which I think is a sign of good hospital.

Absolutely! I always speak to the anesthesiologist before hand. Makes me feel a lot better about going into it cause it puts a face to the man who will literally be holding your life in their hands.
