thyroidectomy

Hello alexa. I had half my thyroid removed in 1996 and the rest has just been absorbed by my body. I also have Hashimoto's. I take T3 and T4 daily and keep my TSH levels at 0.01 (yup, I have a great doctor). I've gained 90 pounds since that surgery and have shed pounds only to pack on those and more. My surgery is 6/22 Roux-en-y.

I'm glad you found the group. There is a wealth of experience here.

I also have Hashimotos, have for 20+ years now and I’m only 37. I still have my thyroid, but my team recommends the gastric bypass for me, for several reasons, but the thyroid problem is one of them. I spoke with my endocrinologist also, and he’s totally on board with WLS. He’s already given me the lab work for post surgery. I think working with both doctors is best for me since I’ve had such a struggle with my thyroid.

Hey, a Hashimoto's sister. It seems as the years have past and the H has absorbed my thyroid, the H tests for antibodies become more normal. Mine was diagnosed with a frozen cross-section during surgery.
I was never tested for thyroid antibodies until I had a miscarriage. My OB is so amazingly intuitive; he tested me for that and a genetic condition MTHFR, which I have. I was almost 12 weeks along, and everything had been fine up til that point. I had thyroid blood work since I was 16, and they’d always say my thyroid was just a little slow and there was nothing they could do. I wish I’d known about Hashimotos or that there were more tests that could have been done when I was younger. I will always make sure my kids have their antibodies checked if they ever have even slightly off thyroid levels.
