Travel

Does any know how much recovery time is needed before travel? I am trying to schedule surgery around family reunions on both sides of the family.
Both trips are long, 6 and 7 hours. At this rate I will have to keep pushing it out until August. I am eligible in late June and early July.
I may just have to skip them but I rarely get to see my extended family. Decisions, decisions....

Thank you Diane. That is a lot to consider particularly since both of the trips are pretty far by car.
I was thinking that even if I tried to go during the two week pre-op diet phase how difficult that may be having to bring everything with me.
Sadly, I may just have to skip the fun stuff this summer but we will see.
I am having an endoscopy tomorrow so hopefully they will not find anything abnormal and I can ask about this kind of stuff.
I hate to postpone mainly because my husband is looking for a new job and who knows if a new company will pay for it. Though i do wonder if the new company would cover other possible surgeries related to RNY such as a stricture. UGH!!

Diane included lots of things to consider. One thing I wanted to mention that my doctors have alerted me to before many of my surgeries...and I've had a ton...DVT, or blood clots after surgery are a concern. Sitting for long periods after surgery is a no-no.

I think it can be done, but given testimonials of many people here oh, you might have a lot more discomfort or even need to go back into the hospital or to visit your surgeon. I had never read so many horror stories as I have since I've been a member of this group.

I meant to attach a photo me at my first Thanksgiving, which was more than a year after I had surgery. Here it is:

And just and just for fun here's a picture of me a few months before surgery:

It won't let me see the pictures for some reason.

Hello
I have had same issues with dvt's. Was told by my hematologist I would be on heparin during my surgery. I take xeralto now. It's good to hear all these stories to be prepared when my surgery is eventually scheduled. I'm working on exercise so I can be good at hospital time.
Thanks

Well, I just made the trip on Friday and I do not think I will be doing it after the surgery. We got stuck in holiday traffic and construction so the 6 hour trip turned into 8 hours. I was grumpy then, so I would probably come unglued if I was in pain.
I had my endoscopy on Wednesday and doc said I have a small hiatal hernia. He has now ordered a gastric emptying study on June 4th and then I see him again on June 10th.
On a good note, I had lost 6 lbs. at my check up on Thursday. YAY! Only fear I have is that I am very close to the BMI of 35 and I don't know if the insurance would cancel me if I get below that. I am starting with a 37 BMI but I think I mentioned all the co-morbidities, Diabetes, HBP, Cholestoral.
Then they told me to love 5 more lbs. by the next visit. Hmm......
