Vertigo

I had some inner ear problems before I was 20 years old that were awful. I was able to clear it up with antibiotics, but there were times I crawled across the floor while puking and the room was spinning.

I’m 61 years old and the last couple of years I have experienced some minor vertigo. This has only happened when standing up to fast after crawling under a car or something similar. Just the past couple of weeks it is occurring intermittently when pulling weeds and a couple of times shortly after getting out of bed. This has not been disabling but disconcerting and it could be a problem if this condition worsens.

Has anyone experienced vertigo before or after surgery and could they please tell me of their experience? I’m thinking about emailing my Dr. about this to see if I should make an appointment?

My RNY surgery is scheduled for 8/17 and don’t want to have any more delays if possible.

Hey James I get vertigo too if I stand up too fast . I had an inner ear infection in both ears a couple of months ago and was causing me to get dizzy .

it Took almost 4 months to get rid of it . I had water in the ears too that took a long time to flush out . Still get dizzy time to time if blood pressure is low. And yeah call your dr.

There is a difference between dizzy and vertigo. Vertigo is actual spinning of the room. Once you get vertigo once, you will likely experience it periodically throughout your life.

It is scary when it happening, especially if it is a bad episode. There is however, a very quick and easy fix for it. It requires a visit to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat doctor). They will put you in a special chair and do an Epley maneuver on you.

I know this sounds nuts but it works like a charm. They move your head into different positions, in a very precise routine. They may have to do it more than once.

Apparently, vertigo is caused by crystals floating around in your inner ear and this process puts them back into place.

I get vertigo often. Most of the time it resolves itself on its own. If it is really bad, I make an appointment with my ENT.

I also get dizzy as I have very low blood pressure and often feel lightheaded when standing up. There is a major difference between the two.

Thank-you! Everyone

I will be getting a hold of my Dr and see if she recommends ENT Dr. What you said rings true for me.

I have no issues with my ears at present (thanks Bill). I checked my BP after one of my dizzy spells & it was 106/70 normally 125/85 plus or minus 10 at most.

Really appreciate your feedback!!

I get dizzy and my vision goes black quiet often. I talked to my PCP about it in March. She said it was most likely related to low blood pressure upon standing since that’s the only time it happens. She said since my body was still adjusting to the surgery, it might happen for a while and for me to keep an eye on it but if I do actually fall or pass out to contact her or my surgeons office immediately.

TY I hope it's not an issue that prevents surgery Hopefully the Dr gets back to me Tomorrow. That must be scary for you!

Follow up with doc but it doesn't actually sound like vertigo but just dizziness. That's a big blood pressure jump and could have easily done it.

My blood pressure at best runs 107/62 and this happens to me often. Inhave noticed it get worse since surgery but I think that's likely due to water intake and getting dehydrated easier.

I was able to get into my PCP for my dizzy spells on Thursday and she had some concerns and did a variety of test and everything checked out. To be on the safe side she had a blood draw taken as well.

The nurse called back and said everything checked out fine. However, since my surgery date is so close, the Dr. decided to have me go in for and echo heart test next week. I have never had one and thought it might be a good idea anyway.

Once again COVID patient counts are going up the reality is they may cancel overnight elective surgeries at my smaller hospital. I’m already going to be 5 months over the 6 months wait my insurance requires. The count has gone from 9 COVID patients to 22 in less than 10 days. In June they canceled overnight surgeries when the COVID patient count hit 40.

Going to do my best to enjoy my son's wedding which is 3 days before by scheduled RNY surgery.

Congrats on your son's wedding! I hope you have a wonderful time.

My daughter was married last September during covid, she had an outdoor wedding outside of Salt Lake City. Masks were only worn by staff. We all had an amazing time. Not one guest (approx 80) got covid.

I hope your surgery doesn't get canceled. I am noticing restrictions are getting tighter here too.

Good luck!

Glad to hear everything checked out okay from the doctor. Good idea to do the echo, it is such an easy test and better to know that all is okay or if not to catch something early. Fingers crossed that you are in the clear.

I was thinking the wedding should be coming up soon. I hope all goes well, have a great time & best wishes to your son and daughter in-law to be!
