Weight Loss Surgery and Thyroid Removal

I'm 54 and 200 lbs. I had my thyroid removed due to papillary cancer a few years ago and have been gaining weight ever since. I am now pre-diabetic, sometimes have high blood pressure, arthritis and joint problems, foot pain, IBS, and my normal weight for years was around 120 lbs. I have UPMC insurance and I want to find out if I would be eligible for weight loss surgery. My BMI is 36.

Welcome! It’ll really depend on if your insurance covers bariatric surgery. Mine does but with conditions. Either over 40 BMI or 35 BMI with medicated comorbidities. My insurance is pretty strict with the comorbidities. They can’t just be diagnosed, they have to be something that’s being treated, and there’s only 3 they allow: sleep apnea, diabetes, or high blood pressure. I have none, pre diabetic, but not treated for it. However, my BMI is 41.6, so that’s how I qualified. But, not all insurance is the same. I’d reach out to your carrier and see what they say. It never hurts to ask. If they don’t, there might be other ways to financially get it done.
