Exercise and alcohol

Hi again! I have two questions
1- before surgery I hatedddd cardio and loveD weight lifting, which is obviously good because incorporating weights are going to help build muscle and lose weight. I can’t lift for three months so my doctor says but i really want to do Zumba or yoga prior, to be more active... than just walking. How long did you guys wait until you started doing more than walking types of exercise? What did you guys do? Any females do squats or exercises to help with the butt not turn into a pancake?? of course I’m going to follow my docs directions. Just wanted to get some other input.

2- I’m not a heavy drinker whatsoever. I’m more of a social drinker. I go on trips once or twice a year and during the trip I would typically go out and drink throughout the night. I know alcohol has a different effect on post Bariatric people so I just wanted to know have any of you (mainly those with a sleeve) had a casual drink at dinner or a night out. How did it make you feel? How was your tolerance changed?? When were you able to drink again..etc?

I didnt have any limits on activities after 2 weeks. At that point I was moved to "listen to your body." That said I am not a planned work out girl. I just don't get into it at all. I am more of a just stay busy type but I think that comes from growing up on a farm. I like to walk but even that is at a slow take in the view pace. I also am not worried about pancake butt as a have a booty that puts many to shame that never goes away, fat or thin.

As for alcohol, I too am not a drinker and honestly haven't had the desire for any since surgery but suger also doesn't really sit well with me at all post surgery so I am glad. That said I know people that can throw them back just fine if not better post surgery than before.

Strength training should take the priority. You want to maintain a high fat to muscle loss ratio around 3:1 (3 lbs fat lost for every 1 lb of muscle). Muscle mass is also beneficial to maintaining your metabolism. Combining strength training in an HIIT program that also raises your heart rate is really the best of both worlds. I still walk almost everyday, but I don't really count that as exercise anymore, that is more just overall movement and mobility.

I has sleeve surgery January 22. As far as alcohol goes, originally my surgeon banned me from alcohol for a year. Not for medical reasons, but because people who had an unhealthy relationship with food and then have gastric surgery, often look for other ways to get their high, since they can't eat.

Many of us ate as an emotional substitute to cover other issues. I know I did. Combine that with all of the changes your body is going to experience, and other conditions like boredom, frustration, and depression, and you have an environment that is ripe for substance abuse.

In my case, after 6 mos, my surgeon was comfortable with my progress and mental condition, and lifted the ban on alcohol.

I can do one glass of scotch or high end whiskey. I don't do well with cheap alcohol, it makes me sick. So does any mixed cocktail with sugar. That makes me extremely unvomfortable/sick. Beer is out completely, as I have eliminated all carbonated beverages from my diet.

My advice... ask your Doctor and follow her/his advice.

Hi Kyla - Welcome to the group!

I did the bands for resistance exercise - exercise bike - treadmill - water aerobics/workouts after my incisions healed. I was released to do any type of exercise within a month of surgery.

As for alcohol - I was told no alcohol. I had RNY 1/22/2020 - because of the way my body absorbs stuff now - more alcohol gets in my system faster and less diluted.

We've celebrated 5 birthdays in the 4 months - so there has been alcohol.

I'm also a member of a wonderful Facebook group - Sisterhood of the traveling Wine of the Carolina's - you find addresses of people in the group in your area and you "wine" them. You take them a bag, basket, bucket, filled with whatever wine/alcohol/soda/tea/coffees they like with snacks and drop it off on their doorstep! It's actually a wonderful experience. It's a lot of fun. I was wined a time or 2 and got 8 of the little bottles of wine in various flavors - took 4 sips from one small bottle - I using the wine in a recipe -and ended up with a giggling buzz. I was grateful that I was home.

It may be something I revisit later on - or never again at all. I've never been much of a drinker. I drank on special occasions - anniversary - New Year's - and the swim up pool bar on vacation :p

Follow whatever guidelines your surgical team has in place for you. There in place for a good reason. Listen to your doctor.

Best of luck!

Man this is something I wonder about also
I love a glass of good red wine !
I too am looking forward to the evening I can once again sit and share a good glass of red wine
Wondering / afraid / anxious about when and what it will do to me
When did most of you try wine again ?
I am in week 5 post op RNY

It's been a life changing 9 months!!!

Boy, you can say that again! In addition to my surgery and weight loss (Congrats on your 85 lbs, I am down 120, but I am guessing I had more to lose!!), I have bought a house and done all of the work that goes with that, got laid off from my job of 12 years, started a new business, and have travelled to 11 states, all during COVID!

Whew... I am hoping 2021 calms down, just a tad.

beer was the thing I had to avoid for a year because of carbonation
Diane, I am also avoiding anything carbonated, but I thought that was supposed to be a permanent thing! How does the carbonation make your stomach feel? To be honest, I am really paranoid about it, so any feedback would be appreciated. Although, I have to say, it was easier to give up soda and beer than I thought it would be. I accidentally grabbed the wrong cup when I went to lunch with my wife the other day, and took a swig of her Dr. Pepper... it did not taste good at all, it didn't even taste sweet. It was just bitter and sour. But it would be nice to try a beer.

Tolerance to alcohol has definitely changed. Any more than a tiny glass of wine and I get double vision, literally! Lol
And that can’t be good for you, so I’m giving it up completely. And I’m around 18 months out from RNY.
Hi Pink Julie
I understand what you are staying but I also enjoy a nice glass of wine and a martini. I surely hope I can still do so in moderation.
