Recovery

I'm on track to have surgery the beginning of December. On average, what is the turn around time to be up & moving around afterwards? I'm very excited & nervous as well.
Not sure if the type of surgery makes a difference. I had gastric bypass on July 12. 4 hr surgery including hernia repair. Prob 4-5 hrs after waking up I was standing & walking a few steps. I can't remember the exact timeline, but since I couldn't get a room until 6 a.m. on the 13th, the surgery recovery people had me up & walking a few times, to the bathroom & back.

Once in my room, I walked around the hallway & past the nurses' station 3-4 times on my own. I was lucky not to have the usual gas pain, and the meds & pain block kept me pain free while I was walking.

I was discharged that afternoon & walked up to my apartment from the parking lot. Started hallway lap walking the next day. Good luck & hope they don't postpone your upcoming surgery.

Welcome to the group! They get you up as soon as possible because they want you to work out the post-surgery gas that can be uncomfortable if you don't. Also as with any surgery you don't want to just lie in bed and wind up with a blood clot.

The words of my doctor as to what you will do just after surgery: Walk, walk, walk and sip, sip, sip!

Great, thanks Judy. Now that song is going around inside my brain again. Sip, sip, sip,
Walk, walk, walk.
Etc.

Welcome to the group. What surgery are you planning on having?

I had my RNY on August 11th. As soon as they had a room for me, I was walking. I got out of the recovery bed and walked around my room for awhile. My surgeon requires 2 night hospital stay. But I was walking the halls.
