What foods cause you heartburn since bariatric surgery?

Which surgery did you have? I can’t think of anything that’s been an issue for me.
I had the sleeve which is known to make it worse. I knew this going into it however, my doctor said that since I only had mild reflux that I was still a good candidate for it. Heartburn also runs in my family so with or without the surgery it would have been an issue. Aging also does this lol. My poor husband who’s healthy gets it frequent now. I’m thinking about following the GERD diet, so cutting out certain foods that typically cause this sort of issue. Doesn’t hurt to try!

Never heard of gerd diet what foods are cut out?
Through research this is what I found that needs to be avoided but the list could be much longer depending on the person. These are just the main ones that cause a lot of issues for GERD patients…
*alcohol
*carbonated beverages
*onion/jalapeños
*fried foods
*citrus fruits & tomatoes
*heavy chocolate foods
*Chili & any tomato sauces
*caffein (use sparingly)
*spicy foods
*too much butter & high fat dairy

Oh that's a bummer on some of those foods to avoid. Onions and tomatoes, and sometimes spicy food are some of my faves. I was lucky enough to have the choice of sleeve or bypass. Having had mild to moderate GERD episodes in the past, I choice gastric bypass. After seeing that list, I am thankful I was able to make that choice. Thanks for sharing.

No foods have bothered my sleeved stomach ever.
Lucky you! Unfortunately I had this even before sleeve but seems to be getting worse the further out I am :/ Today was my first day adjusting my diet and it’s been an absolute BLESSING! I only took 1 Tums today vs 4-6 and I took it as soon as I woke up (my stomach was still trying to recover from what I had the day before).

I think of it this way… What all did I give up for this surgery?? A lot! So if this is just an extension of that to keep me healthy and well then I will instinctively adapt to it like I did with everything else :)… I also had the choice but my doctor and I agreed that since my BMI was on the lower end and at the time I only had mild reflux that the sleeve was the way to go. Especially with it being less invasive and not as restrictive also persuaded me. It’s just what worked for me though. So far the eliminated foods are making a BIG difference. Thank the good Lord! Maybe I can eventually pull myself away from the Omeprazole and Pepcid some day.

That's such a positive way to look at what you need to continue doing to stay healthy and comfortable. Constant stomach upset is beyond difficult at times, and I cannot imagine dealing with that and heartburn on a daily basis. You probably are starting to experience yet another life-changing phase, in the best possible way. You are blessed to have the courage to make these changes and to share what you are learning to help others. Thank you ❤❤

Awe this made me cry, thank you so very much for the kind words. Sometimes we need to hear things like this

Yep, that list became my new way of life back in 2016 when I was diagnosed with GERD. I had to avoid ALL of those thing, plus gummy candy and canned fish.

I had sleeve surgery on 4/12/22 and I have not experienced ANY heartburn or acid reflux since surgery. I can now eat tomato based foods (like chili) with no issues. I still avoid everything else on the list simply because I don’t want to put stress on my new stomach. Honestly, most of the GERD list is bad for me anyhow as a Bariatric patient, except for caffeine. I plan on drinking regular coffee again when I get to month 3 (currently drinking decaf occasionally).

That’s amazing that it doesn’t bother you now! There are some things on that list (caffein one of them) that bothers me some days and others not at all. I try to keep it at a minimum for several reasons but it is definitely nice to have every now and then. I actually enjoy decaf so it works for me lol.

I’m a year out and noticing that I’m having more frequent heartburn.
I read somewhere that acid reflux slowly returns for “some” sleeve patients after a year or so. I always worry about this, but my surgeon assured me that he does a unique 90 degree angled cut on the new stomach to prevent GERD. I’m curious, which foods are giving you heartburn? I just want to be prepared.

I don’t actually have GERD but avoiding some of things they do has helped. I had reflux before surgery but bc of the diet change the first 6 months I didn’t eat all the foods I do now so I guess it makes sense that it’s coming back. Having the sleeve definitely has NOT helped unlike bypass typically does with this issue. I was told by my doctor that sleeve patients can’t avoid this because the stomach is cut so small that it creates pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter. I’m not sure how cutting it any different will make much of a difference if they still plan on removing 80% but then again I’m not a doctor. I have an appointment coming up so I’m gonna ask about this. If you look at the list I posted on here that will show much of what is bothering me. Sometimes my body can handle caffein and other times not so much. Same thing with spicy foods. It’s a toss up but I’m trying to get off of Pepcid and Omeprozole. I wish you the very best on your journey! It’s amazing what our bodies can handle.

My surgeon cut my new stomach at a 90 degree angle right where it connects to the small intestines. Fingers crossed that it works. So far so good!

Before my surgery I assumed I would have the RNY because of my GERD. My surgeon said that when she does any Bariatric surgery, she also fixes the hiatal hernia that almost all obese patients have and that I wouldn’t have GERD issues after and she recommended the sleeve for me. I worried about it anyway. I am almost 4 months post op from my sleeve and I am thrilled to have had no issues with GERD! I know it’s early yet but she is confident that I won’t suffer from it as a result of the sleeve Before the surgery, any tomato based sauce was a nightmare for me.

I brought the hiatal hernia up to my doctor too but I guess I didn’t need it cause he never mentioned it after surgery. I’m not sure if it’s hereditary or not but most ALL of the women in our family old and young suffer from severe heartburn/reflux or GERD regardless of their weight. Unfortunately having my surgery did not help with that but I was not comfortable getting bypass which typically takes care of this problem. So now it’s up to me to weed out what bothers me. I hope for your sake that it forever stays away!
