5 Months

Hello everyone,

I hit 5 months post op yesterday! Spent the day out with my niece school shopping. It sucked, but not because I am too fat anymore. haha Just because I am not a huge fan of shopping and trying to have a 9 y/o trying on clothes and shoes is like trying to herd sheep. haha This is my brother's daughter that just passed away in June. I wondered if she realized and really under stood that her dad died. I learned yesterday that she very much does, without a doubt. I want her to understand but it was very sad to hear her talk about her dad and how she really wants him to be shopping with us. It was hard, but we made the best of the day.

Anyway, I really am doing great with this and I am so thankful for it.
I can eat just about anything I want without issues. Sometimes I soft breads sit very heavy for a few minutes but I don't really eat them much so it is not a big deal for me. I personally think it is a good and a bad thing. Good because, well obviously I don't have to worry about being sick all the time. Bad, because this includes treats. I have never dumped but any time I eat sugars or higher fats I get paranoid about it. I have had up to 1/2 cup of REGULAR icecream with no issues. I have eaten fried chicken a few times but pull the skin off if it is not skinless. I can eat 1 chicken tender at a time and usually about 1/2 of a breast. That is really the only fried foods I have had.

I am still eating between 800-1000 calories a day. Hitting 70 grams of protein, usually more daily. Most days 80 oz of water or more daily.
I have went over my calories 2 times, once having some alcohol for my Birthday earlier this month and once was just a VERY long day so I ended up having some peanuts.

My favorite NSV would be, being able to buy shirts anywhere. Like concerts, festivals, souvenir shops. ETC. I always wore the same shirts, ordered in different colors, plain and not reflecting my personality so it is fun to buy different shirts that are more "me".

I have lost 93 lbs in the 5 months since surgery and 130 lbs since I started my WLS process.
I still am not down to my lowest adult weight but getting close and will be passing that before I know it!

KEEP CHUGGING EVERYONE! ❤️ ❤️

Very inspiring! You are just doing awesome and I love hearing about your progress!
That is so kind. Thank you!

Someone in the FB group I am in made a comment that all they ever see is people sharing their problems and it is making her hesitant to have surgery. It is good people are honest about their experience, good or bad. But, it is a proven fact that negative travels faster than positive. You will hear a horrible review of customer service twice as much as you will hear about a positive situation.

I love that I can be the "good" review which may help ease some people nerves. But, nervous about coming off as bragging about how easy this process has been for me.
Regardless, people NEED to hear the good too.

What group are you in? Cuz I have given up on most of them. I have tried to talk myself out of surgery about 10 times lol! This seems to be the most positive I have found.

Baritastic social is a FB group I am in. This is where I saw the comment about only ever seeing negative things and all the issues people have.
Also, my surgery center has a private FB group, but they only accept actual patients of theirs.
I am part of this forum and Bariatric pal, which is also a free support group forum.

Be grateful you can eat anything. This time is a huge opportunity to adopt better eating habits. It IS scary when you realise that you can eat ice cream (or popcorn, which is my downfall lol). But, I love ice cream so it's nice that I can occasionally have some.

I do struggle with making bad decisions and have to work at avoiding all my old, bad food habits. So, I've set a high and low weight that is acceptable to me. When I hit the high, there is no ice cream or popcorn until I am back down. My uncle, who has ever been overweight, does "tomatoes instead of potatoes" when his pants get tight. I do not wait for tight clothes but try to keep the same mental philosophy.

I cannot eat the large amounts of food that I could eat previously. But, I think everyone can make enough bad choices to gain, whether its sweets or breads or bacon or cheese. I used to eat like a toddler given free rein. Now I try to eat in a healthy and fulfilling way.

I do love popcorn too, I have it once in a while. (or a little more. haha) Maybe once a week. But, I buy the small 100 cal. bags and just eat one of them.

Smartfood white cheddar popcorn is my guilty snack. But it's very satisfying very quickly, so the bag lasts a good amt of time.

My new tried and true snack/lunch is a 30gm protein shake and an apple. I don't quite get filled up with the shake sometimes, but "paring" lol it with an apple keeps me satisfied for several hours. It's also a way for me to get healthy carbs in my diet.

Just in case it needs to be said, you shouldn't eat popcorn early in your recovery. It's one of the worst things that can get stuck passing through your guts and can cause big problems. It's the worst thing among the crunchy things you're dying to eat.

Just make sure you ask your medical professionals for a list of foods that might cause problems, or ask specifically about foods you're craving. You don't have the digestive system you used to have and poky, sharp things can get stuck in your colon.

really, it's super-important to ask for a menu or list of foods. I had RYGB with an open procedure, so it was much different than getting the sleeve or the other abbreviated surgeries available today. I moved forward with my menu more quickly and with no side-effects, but eating the wrong thing can actually be dangerous.

It's SO important to ask your team, your nutritionist, your doctor and/or nurse, etc. But make sure you ask these questions of your bariatric team, not your regular doc, who really doesn't know the fine points.
Thank you, but I was cleared to eat popcorn. I have NO retrictions on food anymore. I can eat anything as long as I can tolerate it and stay within my plan requirements. (macros and calories) I am sure a lot has changed in the 20 years since you have had surgery. Things change in the medical field pretty much daily.
