Hi everyone. I'm due for surgery in about two months. I have one more visit to do in September. My surgeon told me I could schedule which ever surgery I wanted but I'm unsure. My gp said to get the sleeve but I have a mild case of gerd which could mean problems with it. I'm a little nervous about the bypass because it seems so involved. Can anyone give me feedback on this? Thanks

You really should discuss the pros and cons with your surgeon, they have the most experience with all of it.

With that being said, I originally wanted the sleeve but after discussing pros and cons with my surgeon I ended up going with Bypass.
The major factor for me was my already severe GERD and the chance of it getting worse. I was miserable already and couldn't for the life of me imagine it getting worse. I was on 2 prescriptions plus still eating tums.. and still vomiting lava. It was horrible.

Now, 5 months post op.. I have ZERO acid or GERD problems. I am off all medications and haven't had even a single tums.

The decisions is yours, but I highly suggest discussing in debt both options with the surgeon.

I second what Kcuster83 said. I too was given the choice of gastric bypass or the sleeve. Because I've had GERD in the past, I didn't want to have to deal with it after surgery. I chose gastric bypass and have never regretted it for a single minute. Definitely talk it through with your team, do your research also, and do what is best for you. Good luck.

It’s an important discussion to have with your surgeon. I was thinking about getting RNY, but my surgeon convinced me to get the sleeve. Here are some things to ask about or consider:

• Do you have GERD and is that going to be an issue after surgery?
• What size pouch does the surgeon create with each procedure? My sleeve is the smallest size possible, 32 French bougie.
• Do you have an addiction to sweets? Dumping has a higher occurrence with RNY. It can be a problem or work as a deterrent from eating sweets.
• Malabsorption occurs with RNY. Can you commit to taking supplements?
• How much weight do you want to lose overall and how fast? RNY results tend to be at a higher percentage and at a faster rate.

One more thing to consider. Do you have oral meds that you must be able to fully absorb? I’m a cancer survivor and may need meds in the future, so I opted for the sleeve.

Discuss your goals with your surgeon, in specifics!! Read up on benefits and risks of both procedures. Make whatever decision you are comfortable with.

That being said I had the bypass. I had (and still have) damage to my esophagus due to reflux and I had (and no longer have) diabetes. RnY is much more likely to have a positive effect on diabetes and no acid reflux issues.

My husband had the sleeve, as his surgeon refused to do a bypass on him. He's doing well at 6 months out.

Both can lead to long term success as long as you out in the work.

I had gerd before surgery and take pantropyzole since surgery, think I spelled that wrong. RNY has the most long term success rate after surgery According to studies.

Hello, I chose GB because I had silent acid reflux and the onset of GERD, HB, asthma, diabetes... I am extremely happy and off all medications except I take Fasenra for my asthma and that is wonderful. You just have to set your mind and follow the instructions. I have lost 62 pounds since April 20, 2022 and thank God every day. My doctor said the GB would be better because I would probably have to address the GERD later on. My surgery is coming up next month and I decided to go with GB due to already dealing with GERD. My surgeon said the sleeve could possibly cause reflux, even when it wasn’t present prior to surgery, so we felt GB would be the better choice for me.

I had sleeve with GERD and ended up with HORRIBLE issues, which then required a conversion to bypass. My opinion, is just that - an opinion - but I say bypass ALL DAY LONG.
