Eating Speed

My head got the message on the need for exercise, food portion, water and protein. What gives me more trouble is the habit of gulping my water and food! I know the 20 chews per bite trick and to drag a meal over 20 minutes. I can't adhere to that. 65 years of bad eating habits is hard to shake!

Yes I also had a problem gulping my fluids I find small sips help out a lot ...

I agree tex! It's very difficult to learn to eat again. One thing that I know is a no-no that I can't stop is taking tiny sips of water with my meals. I love spice and need a palate cleanser. I try to just sip enough to coat my tongue but I know that still isn't good.

Works in progress I guess.

Well, if you want a preview of coming attractions... you will be able to drink & eat at the same time before you know it. Wine with dinner, coffee with breakfast, beer with hot dogs at the game... all can be done after your body adjusts to its new weight. Just gotta go really slowly. I don't eat out much because I take twice as long & eat half as much as everyone else at the table. They get kind of annoyed. I sometimes just ask the waiter for a to-go box as soon as he brings my plate to the table & take most of the food off my plate immediately so it looks like I'm going the same speed.

That is wonderful news Diane! The way the nutritionist was talking, I thought that I'd have to sacrifice beverages with meals for life! It was actually on my list to bring up at my 6 month follow up in September.

I've run into this already. Met my mom (who wasn't keen on surgery, didn't tell her I'd had it until after I was back to work and feeling alright). She looked at my plate and said, "That's all you're going to have? That can't be healthy". I assured her that it is and that I am taking vitamins 4x a day, drinking a protein shake for breakfast, etc. But I could tel, that she's still disappointed that I did it. Oh well, I'm happy about it. :p

Brenda, you're still seeing a nutritionist, right? I ask because taking a multivitamin four times a day seems like it might not be a good thing.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your concern. No, I'm not taking "regular" multivitamins 4x/day. The vitamins I'm taking are chewables formulated for post-bariatric patients: Wild Cherry Complete Chewable Bariatric Multivitamin.

My nutritionist loves these because although you have to take them 4x/day, you don't need any additional supplements.
